This weekend, Andrés Manuel López Obrador took advantage of his visit to Sinaloa and Nayarit to deal a new blow to the opposition.

This time the revenue from his endless tours throughout the country escalated beyond campaign gestures with the announcement of two unexpected signings for his Executive.

The two outgoing governors of the states he visited: Quirino Ordaz and Antonio Echevarría.

A veteran PRI and a PAN with lineage who finish their terms after being defeated by Morena in the June elections.

The president thus returns to take the initiative and deepens the division and fragility of an opposition that, despite the improvement in seats after the June elections, is unable to straighten the course or shape strong leaderships in the face of Morena's omnipresence.

The hopes of the opposition for the second part of the six-year term are largely focused on the consolidation of the electoral alliance forged between the PRI, PAN and PRD.

The balance after the June elections was a considerable increase in seats for its partners.

But the litmus test is to become not only an electoral platform, but also a front with a common program to contest Morena's legislative action, which now only has a simple majority in the hands of its partners.

Despite already having a diffuse shared parliamentary agenda, the pact has leaks like the alignment of the PRI with Morena during the voting of the package of laws that create the National Guard among other flirtations with both parties. While the renewal of leadership continues to stagnate and the possibilities of returning to the fight by one of López Obrador's biggest competitors, former PAN candidate Ricardo Anaya, have also disappeared after the accusation of corruption by the Prosecutor's Office and his leave the country.

For the CIDE professor and political analyst, Ignacio Marván, the announcement of the two new signings by the president shows the fragility of the opposition alliance: “These movements indicate that the pact exists between the leadership.

But it has no discipline or cohesion.

The alliance has not permeated the other sectors of the parties ”.

Despite the weight that governors represent in Mexico, Marván clarifies that in any case neither of the two are tough cadres within their parties.

“They did not participate in the opposition governors' front that had some relevance a couple of years ago.

Rather, they have been characterized by a cooperative relationship with the federal government ”.

Crossing of accusations

The leaders of the PRI and the PAN point to that pactist logic of each of the two former governors individually as the motive behind both movements.

From the PRI they acknowledge that they were not even informed by Ordaz and its president, Alejandro Moreno, reacted this Monday by censuring the former governor of Sinaloa.

"Absolutely no one can use the acronym of the PRI to negotiate positions, we are not going to allow the intentions of the Morena government to divide either the coalition or the PRI," he said through his Twitter account.

Ordaz is a PRI veteran with a four-decade career in middle positions at both the federal and state levels. Close to Enrique Peña Nieto's group, he also passed through the ranks of the Green Party. Both from within the PRI and by other voices of the opposition, Ordaz has been accused of favoring, at least by omission, Morena during the June elections. “We have already denounced that it was a narco-election. We do not understand how our organization secretary could have been kidnapped by organized crime for five days. Ordaz did not take care of his own party. What I was doing was negotiating with Morena, ”says Paloma Sánchez, federal deputy of the party for Sinaloa.

In the same vein, they interpret the movement of the former governor of Nayarit within the PAN. "Echevarría has always shown his preference for supporting the Morena government as a way to recover the State from the financial and security crisis left by the previous governor," says a member of the party's national executive committee. Echevarría is a businessman without partisan experience prior to his candidacy in 2017. But with a strong lineage. His father, Antonio Echevarría Domínguez, another powerful local businessman, was the first PAN candidate to oust the PRI from power in Nayarit.

Echeverría Jr. in turn took over from the dark period of the PRI member Roberto Sandoval, arrested in June for corruption.

In alliance with his prosecutor, Edgar Veytia, sentenced in the US to 20 years for drug trafficking, swept the public coffers and left a trail of forced disappearances, tortured people and families dispossessed of their homes.

Since the arrival to power of Morena, Echevarría has been characterized by a good harmony with the president, publicly supporting the Government's infrastructure projects as well as federal interventions after the hurricane of 2018. “Toño's work has been so good that I am going to invite him to continue supporting us in the federal government, ”López Obrador announced on Sunday in the absence of knowing the position he has reserved for him.
