As first reported in "Israel Today", Guy Goodes has been appointed coach of the Israeli national team in place of Oded Katash and will lead the national team in the coming years.
Today (Tuesday) the professional committee accepted the recommendation of the committee's chairman Amos Frishman to appoint Goodes to the position when the decision still needs official approval from the union's management.
Goodes, 50, will take up the post with the approval of the management and the first task he faces is the national team window in November, as part of the 2023 World Cup qualifiers, when the home team will meet Poland and play an away game in Estonia.
In the summer of 2022, Goodes will lead the team to the European Championships, then the home of Israel will be held in Prague and the team will meet Finland, the Netherlands, Serbia, Poland and the Czech Republic.
Goodes is the sixth coach in the history of the team who was also a team player, he was preceded by: Shimon Shelach, Ralph Klein, Eliyahu Amiel, Avraham Hamo and Oded Katash, who is currently finishing four years in the position, where he went with the team to European Championships and the Basketball Association would like to thank him.
Goodes played in all of Israel's youth teams and wore the national uniform 64 times, in a career that lasted for more than a decade.
He was called up to the team at the age of 17 by the late Ralph Klein and became a significant player on the team in the pre-Olympic tournament in '92, when he was only 21. Although he suffered quite a few serious injuries in his career, he managed to play 2 European Championships and scored the winning basket against Slovenia at EuroBasket 1999 in France.
Goodes retired from active play at the end of the 42003 season and immediately became the assistant coach at Maccabi Rishon LeZion, the team in which he retired from active play and a season later became the head coach. Coach of the British team, coach of the reserve team and since November 2018 has been the head coach of Maccabi Rishon Lezion.
Goodes commented on the decision: "I am happy for the appointment, for the great honor I was given, for the privilege, appreciation and trust to lead the Israeli team. This is a very, very emotional moment for me, as a former player of the Israeli team, from the youngest teams to the seniors I coached the certificate team at the time and I am aware of the great challenge and the great commitment that awaits me. For my part, I will do everything possible or necessary to help the team succeed. We stand a very significant year ago for the team, with two completely different and very large missions, mixed with each other because of the corona crisis. In November we will open the Cup qualifiers in two games against Poland and Estonia and next summer the European Championships in Prague await us and we will want to succeed in both of these missions. There is a lot of quality in the current team and we have seen in recent years under Oded that the team has done a beautiful process that we want to continue. "
