As part of the “World Cleanup Day”, the “Plastikpate” initiative and the Würmtaler local group of the Bund Naturschutz are organizing rubbish collection campaigns in Graefelfing, Planegg and Neuried this Sunday.

The organizers have worked out around 40 routes for this purpose.

Würmtal -

“World Cleanup Day” takes place every year on the third weekend in September around the globe.

Last year alone, eleven million people in 160 countries took part in the campaign and mainly collected plastic and packaging waste in order to send a signal for a clean environment.

Neurieder, Planegger and Gräfelfinger can also take part in the day of action again this year.

Start and finish stations at the marketplaces

The Würmtaler initiative “Plastic Sponsors” and the local branch of the Bund Naturschutz have prepared four start and finish stations for this Sunday, September 19, at the marketplaces in Graefelfing, Planegg and Neuried and at Martinsplatz in Martinsried.

"We have planned around ten routes for each of the four stations - a colorful mix from the station streets to small paths and, above all, streets on grass verges, where there is often a lot of rubbish," explains organizer Dorit Zimmermann.

Hope for many cyclists

Due to the corona, the routes should be walked or driven by two participants, if possible from one household. At 10 a.m., the organizers hand out a large garbage bag and a route plan at each of the starting points. "It would be ideal if as many people as possible came by bike, as some routes are further away from the meeting point," says Dorit Zimmermann. At 12 noon, all participants come back to the respective points with the full bags. If more than 20 people come to each station, the organizers have other “reserve routes” up their sleeves. Although there is no meeting place in Lochham like in Martinsried, there are definitely plans to collect rubbish there as well. “That just depends on whether there are some people with their bikes in Graefelfing,” says Dorit Zimmermann, who worked out all the routes herself.

After the collection campaign, the garbage is brought to the recycling center in Neuried, which is taken by the other groups to two large, specially ordered containers from Wittmann, which will be located in Graefelfing.

"We do believe that at least 20 people could come to each group, and of course we hope that people will participate," says Dorit Zimmermann.

Around 40 “plastic sponsors” on the move in the Würmtal

Even beyond the “World Cleanup Day”, around 40 “plastic sponsors” are out and about in the Würmtal all year round. Each of the volunteers looks after a certain section, goes through it regularly and collects rubbish. "On my route between the Feodor-Lynen-Gymnasium in Planegg and Neuried, there were only three large garbage bags on one side within six months," reports Zimmermann. While you could walk on sections like theirs “almost every week”, the amounts of rubbish are less on more remote paths, for example in forests. “But I think it is important to pay attention to such remote streets, as garbage is rarely collected there. We have already seen everything from complete household rubbish bags to oil cans.
