The Consumer Council has drawn a total of 9 types of silicone foldable food boxes and 5 types of folding cups on the market. The capacity of the food box ranges from 600 ml to 1 liter, and the price ranges from $29 to $130.

The price of folding cups ranges from $12 to $200, and the capacity ranges from 130 ml to 470 ml. One of them does not indicate the capacity.

Detect the content of volatile organic substances in 14 products, mainly low-volatility small molecular siloxanes (Siloxanes).

According to the German LFGB (Food, Tobacco Products, Cosmetics, and Other Daily Necessities Management Law) standards, its content cannot exceed 0.5%, but 5 of the 14 products meet the standard, and 9 exceed the upper limit.

Silicone, also known as organosilicone or silicone rubber, is a mixture between synthetic rubber and synthetic plastic. Silicone produced in different processes has different characteristics, such as high temperature resistance and good stability, and is widely used in kitchen utensils.

The test results show that the volatile organic matter content of the three food boxes and the sealing ring silicone materials of Ikea, Gemini and Ideale Chef is 0.12% to 0.44%, which meets the requirements of the German LFGB.

For folding cups, Stojo and Lifeventure's silicone materials for folding cups contain 0.19% and less than 0.1% respectively, which also meets the standard.

However, the volatile organic substance content of the 6 food boxes exceeded the standard. Among them, the silicone folding lunch box of Zhili warehouse reached 1.3%, which exceeded the standard by more than 2 times.

The content of other Lexngo, EZ Cook, Diamond Gourmet, Cinnamoroll food boxes ranges from 0.76% to 1.1%, all exceeding the German LFGB standard (0.5%).

The content of Daiso, Yishijia, and Seiwa-pro's 3 foldable cups also ranges from 0.8% to 1.4%. Among the 14 products, the content of Yishijia foldable cup is the most exceeding the standard, with the detection volume reaching 1.4%, which is 2.8 times exceeding the standard. .

Long-term exposure to volatile organic compounds can hurt the liver

If the silicone food container contains too much volatile organic substances, it may migrate into the food contained, or even affect food safety.

Studies have also shown that long-term exposure to high-dose siloxanes may affect the liver health of laboratory animals.

Tips for using silicone containers

Silicone boxes may generally be put into microwave ovens to reheat food. However, although all of the silicone food box samples tested by the Consumer Council claimed to be suitable for microwave heating, it was found that the lids of 6 out of 9 models were not suitable for microwave ovens. It needs to be removed when heating, only 2 product labels are applicable, and the other one does not indicate.

2. Wash thoroughly

Newly purchased silicone products should be thoroughly washed with detergent before use.

3. Keep away from fire

Although silicone products are resistant to cold and heat, they should not be heated directly with an open flame or placed near a fire source.

4. Pay attention to valve design
