Berlin / Munich - Armin Laschet * has been controversial for some time.
During the election campaign he was noticed by disrespectful behavior in the flood area *, confused by the demand for a "bridge lockdown" * and was confronted with allegations of plagiarism. * This development is increasingly affecting the Union's polls, which remain far below the claims.
This is shown by numerous surveys.
At the end of August, 73 percent of those questioned in a survey by the opinion research institute Civey on behalf of the Augsburger Allgemeine newspaper said they had a negative opinion of Laschet.
Of the Union's voters, only 43 percent said they were behind Laschet.
Another Civey survey from the end of August showed that around 70 percent would prefer to replace Laschet with Markus Söder *.

The latest survey by the opinion research institute on behalf of the news portal Focus Online confirms this trend.
Accordingly, the Union with Söder as candidate for chancellor could get a total of 37 percent of the votes in the federal election in 2021 *: That would be five percentage points more than in the election in 2017.

For comparison:
several Sunday questions showed values for CDU * and CSU * between 19 and 25 percent.
However, the survey has a catch that makes a comparison difficult.
The opinion research institute asked the following question in the survey: "Which party would you vote if Markus Söder were the top candidate of the CDU / CSU?"
Background to the latest Civey poll
For the survey on behalf of the news portal Focus Online, the opinion research institute considered a total of 5004 responses from 9 to 10 September 2021.
According to Civey, the evaluation is based on a scientific process based on the composition of the population in Germany.
The statistical error is therefore 2.5 percent.
Opinion polls in the run-up to elections are a snapshot. They cannot be interpreted as a result forecast.
Despite all its incompleteness, the survey shows a second trend very clearly: Above all, the SPD * with Chancellor candidate Olaf Scholz * is currently benefiting from the election campaign by Laschet and the Union.
The Allensbach Institute, for example, saw the social democratic party at 27 percent at the beginning of September. * In the Civey survey on the Söder constellation as CDU / CSU candidate for chancellor, however, the SPD only came to 19 percent.
In other words, starting from a left-right scale that is outdated in political science, numerous voters from the “center” still jump between the supposed popular parties.
The Greens *, around Chancellor candidate Annalena Baerbock *, are currently at the same percentage level in both models in several polls on the federal election: 17 percent.

At the CSU party convention, Laschet and Söder, who were once competitors, were in harmony.
Unity should be conveyed to the public.
In doing so, however, Laschet made another faux pas.
In his speech, he sharply attacked the previous and possibly future coalition partner SPD - with a historical comparison.
He said: "In all the decisions made in post-war history, Social Democrats have always been on the wrong side."
Numerous politicians were then outraged.
For example, Secretary General Lars Klingbeil wrote on Twitter: “Under Laschet, the Union has really lost decency and dignity.” Later he announced via the SPD press office: “The Union was not prepared for this federal election campaign and has it in the closet of the Konrad-Adenauer-Haus only found dirt.
