The tunnel between MTR Kowloon Station and the Olympic Station has subsided. The foundation works of the Tsim Sha Tsui Fire Station Complex on To Wah Road on the site have been suspended. The Buildings Department and Architectural Services Department have confirmed structural safety after inspections, and the project contractor will formulate mitigation measures , To reduce the impact of railway facilities.

Senior civil engineer Ni Xueyan pointed out today (15) on the Hong Kong and Taiwan program "Millennium" that if the slope caused by local subsidence is estimated to be at a safe level, it is still possible to continue driving. It is believed that the MTR will check the slope every day.

He also estimated that there is a high chance that the construction involves pumping water, which reduces the water pressure of the soil near the tunnel and causes settlement, which can be remedied by grouting.

The Hong Kong Government announced last week that a monitoring point on the site involved recorded a settlement of 20.27 mm on the 7th of this month, which was "slightly" higher than the 20 mm stoppage index. The original foundation works on the site have been suspended.

After inspections by the Buildings Department and the Architectural Services Department, the structure has been confirmed to be safe, and the project contractor will formulate mitigation measures to reduce the impact of railway facilities.

Senior civil engineer Ni Xueren pointed out that because the Tung Chung line road tunnel involved was located in a reclaimed area, the water flow would make the geology more complicated. He estimated that the relevant site works involved pumping processes, which would reduce the water pressure of the soil near the tunnel and cause settlement.

He pointed out that if there is a local settlement and the relevant slope is still at a safe level, the MTR can still operate. It is believed that the MTR will check the slope every day.

As for the mitigation measures, he said that grouting can be used to remedy the situation. On the one hand, it can reduce the soil permeability coefficient and reduce the flow of water into the site. Groundwater in the outer soil will be replenished to reduce the drop in water pressure in a disguised manner.

He also pointed out that grouting works can consolidate the soil and reduce soil movement.

He pointed out that relevant parties can set up instruments to monitor changes in soil water pressure.
