Juan Guaidó on Tuesday rejected the Public Ministry's announcement of a new investigation against him, this time for alleged crimes related to a state-owned company based in Colombia.

The Venezuelan opposition leader affirmed on Twitter that the accusation is false and fabricated.

"Venezuelan assets since 2019 are and WILL CONTINUE protected so that the dictatorship does not continue looting them," he said.

The Venezuelan Citizen Power has opened more than two dozen cases against him in recent years.

The attorney general of Venezuela, Tarek William Saab, announced this Tuesday through Twitter the opening of the investigation against Guaidó for the alleged commission of several crimes related to the state company Monómeros Colombo Venezolanos SA The company is under control of the opposition after the sanctions imposed by the US on the Maduro government and is based in Colombia.

Monómeros is owned by Venezuela, is located in Barranquilla and produces and markets different petrochemical products, including fertilizers.

Saab added on Twitter that two prosecutors were appointed to carry out the investigations.

The possible crimes mentioned are "usurpation of functions, treason, conspiracy, qualified theft of assets and association to commit a crime."

The Prosecutor's Office did not disclose further details of this announcement and has so far not responded to CNN's requests for further information.

The criminal investigation arises after it became known on September 6 that the Superintendency of Companies of Colombia put Monómeros under control.

With this, the superintendency can "order the necessary corrective measures to correct a critical situation of a legal, accounting, economic or administrative nature."

The Board of Directors of Monómeros does not agree with the decision, which caused its president to resign from the position.

This corporate situation has also brought discussions in the leadership of the Venezuelan opposition.

In practice, Guaidó has had control of the company since 2019, when Colombia, like the United States and other countries, recognized him as president in charge of Venezuela.

The announcement of this new criminal investigation against Juan Guaidó also occurs in the middle of the negotiation process that is taking place in Mexico between the questioned Maduro government and the unitary platform that represents the Venezuelan opposition, including Guaidó himself.
