La Palma - The earth is shaking on the Spanish Canary Island of La Palma.

In the volcanic mountain "Cumbre Vieja" (

) around 3000 earthquakes have been recorded in the past few days.

The most violent so far reached a value of 3.5 on the Richter scale.

The rich nature around the mountains attracted masses of tourists over the years.

Is a volcano erupting again on La Palma?

La Palma: Impending volcanic eruption on Spanish Canary Island will "come sooner or later"

"Sooner or later there will be an eruption on La Palma", Luca D'Auria is certain.

"The Cumbre Vieja is an active volcano," said the head of the volcanic institute Involcan after a report by

Tagesspiegel

on Spanish radio.

The institution monitors the island craters of the mountain range, which is considered to be the most active volcanic landscape in the Canary Islands.

"Yellow Alert" is currently declared on La Palma.

Civil protection is on alert.

"It is important that we are prepared," said D'Auria according to the report.

However, even he cannot yet predict when exactly the volcanic eruption will occur.

"That can take weeks, years or even decades."

On the basis of the latest data, however, the volcano expert expects the eruption to take place "in the next few weeks or months".

D'Auria and his team found out that the epicenter of the earthquake activity moved from an initial eight to twelve kilometers depth to one to three kilometers up on Wednesday (September 15).

If the alert level jumped from yellow to red in the coming days and weeks, evacuation measures would take place.

Four communities on the Canary Island are affected by the impending volcanic eruption; almost 35,000 people live here.

Numerous hotels and apartments for tourists are located in this area, especially in the largest town Los Llanos de Aridane.

The accommodations are traditionally well attended in September, especially by German holidaymakers.

But they can currently spend their vacation relaxed on La Palma.

"Life on the island is currently going on normally," the local authorities announced.

One is experienced in dealing with volcanoes on La Palma and therefore well prepared for all possible scenarios, it said.

Meanwhile, a well-known volcano recently caused a stir in Italy.
