In general, women have incorporated gynecological examinations into their health routine.

Men, on the other hand, are less adherent to the annual urological check-ups that are recommended to perform from the age of 50, although in some cases it is necessary to start earlier.

It is that, from that age, 4 out of 10 will present prostate diseases such as benign hyperplasia or cancer.

The prostate is a gland of the male reproductive system, which is located

between the bladder and the urinary sphincter

, in front of the rectum.

It contains cells that produce part of the seminal fluid that protects and nourishes the sperm.

"40% of men over 50 years of age will suffer from prostate disease at some point, and that percentage increases over time,

reaching 80-90% at 80 years of age

. Controls, a balanced diet and diagnosis early are the keys to their care, "says Gonzalo Vitagliano, head of the Oncology Section of the Urology Service of the German Hospital, within the framework of

World Prostate Health Day

.

Regular controls favor early detection.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia

Among these diseases is benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

Vitagliano explains that it is a condition associated with aging that

begins around the age of 40

and is mainly characterized by structural changes at the prostate level.

"Although it is not related to prostate cancer, they are two diseases that

can coexist,

" he clarifies.

Likewise, it warns that BPH impacts on the quality of life of those who live with it "but also, over time, it can generate a deterioration of the bladder muscle, alter the function of the kidneys and lead to kidney failure."

Some of the symptoms that are associated with this condition are: getting up at night to urinate, a decrease in the caliber of the urinary stream,

difficulty in starting to urinate

, an increased frequency of urination, an urgent feeling to go to the bathroom due to the desire to pee and feeling of a busy bladder after urinating.

The available treatments are divided into two large groups: medical and surgical, the specialist specifies.

"Among the

medical treatments

there are recommendations in the diet that can help and various groups of drugs that improve symptoms. And among the

surgical

there are options of minimally invasive surgery without incisions with rapid recovery and conventional surgeries. The choice of one or the other alternative It depends on each individual patient. "

Prostate cancer is the most common type in men.

Prostate cancer

Prostate cancer is the most common in men: it produces about 11,000 new cases per year (one in five among all types of tumors detected in men) and causes more than 3,700 deaths.

The importance of detecting it early is that, if necessary, treatment can prevent or delay its progression;

while

there are cases in which only follow-up is indicated

.

The objective: to prevent men from coming to the consultation in advanced stages of the disease.

"In recent years, several studies have shown that thanks to the use of early diagnosis programs, the detection of localized tumors that can be cured has increased and

the death of prostate cancer has decreased

. Currently, thanks to early diagnosis, it became the third leading cause of death after lung and colorectal cancer, "says Vitagliano.

"Early detection is associated with a

higher cure rate

. This is done through urological control tailored to each patient, taking into account their age and the presence or absence of predisposing factors. The digital rectal exam and the specific prostate antigen ( PSA) remain the mainstays of early diagnosis. "

According to the specialist, prostate cancer is a

multifaceted disease

"that requires a specific approach for each individual", which will lead to the design of the observation or treatment strategy.

In the event that a therapeutic approach is required, "the development of new technologies such as next-generation radiotherapy and minimally invasive surgery have made it possible to

treat this malignancy in early stages

with minimal consequences for the patient's quality of life."

A proper diet, the first ally

"Diet plays a fundamental role in prostate health and

could contribute to reducing the risk of cancer,

" says the oncologist and, in this sense, advises following a food plan that includes:

✔Vegetables from the cruciferous family, such as broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower

✔Vegetables rich in omega-3

✔Foods rich in vitamin E such as vegetable oils, nuts and seeds, wheat germ and whole grains

✔Foods rich in fiber, such as whole grains

✔ Lycopene-rich foods such as tomato, pink grapefruit, and watermelon

✔Selenium-rich foods such as nuts, shellfish, fish, wheat bran, wheat germ, oats, and brown rice

✔Soya: its isoflavones help reduce levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a male hormone that favors the excessive growth of prostate tissue

What's more:

✔ Avoid spicy foods, alcohol, caffeine and those substances that irritate the urinary tract

✔ Reduce the consumption of red meat and saturated fat

✔ Drink plenty of fluids to keep your bladder clean
