The flood disaster in July this year left a swath of devastation in the Rhineland-Palatinate village of Kreuzberg an der Ahr.

The extent is unbelievable.

(Construction) help is urgently needed.

This also comes from the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district.

The 22 communities are starting a fundraising campaign for a community center project.

District

- Kreuzberg, wonderfully situated in a romantic valley on the Ahr, about 30 kilometers southeast of Bonn, was a tranquil place - with its typical half-timbered houses, the vine-covered slopes and the picturesque landscape.

But then came the flood night on July 15th, in which much was destroyed that was important to the 700 residents.

Two residents even lost their lives at the time.

A picture of destruction

"Our old people say that the destruction is more devastating than the destruction after the war," reports the mayor Anke Hupperich in a moving letter that she wrote together with Praxedis von Boeselager, who is also involved in flood relief. Aerial photographs leave you speechless: streets, entire houses and public infrastructure were simply torn away or badly damaged by the masses of water. The entire valley has lost its face, says Hupperich.

The contact between the Rhinelander and the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district came about by chance. Harald Heinlein from Ohlstadt, on-board technician in an ADAC helicopter, was on duty in the disaster area - and reported to Mayor Christian Scheuerer (non-party) in his home town. The town hall chief then contacted the two women in question. “The people are desperate. Despite government aid, they feel left alone, ”is his assessment. For the local politician it was therefore clear: this is where help is needed - uncomplicated and fast.

So the idea of a county-wide fundraising campaign was born.

Scheuerer, who is the spokesman for the district mayor, did not have to convince his colleagues.

They were there right away.

The 22 municipalities, from Spatzenhausen to Mittenwald, guarantee that one hundred percent of the money arrives in Kreuzberg, which is more than 600 kilometers away.

The district office supports the initiative and sets up the donation account, which can be used immediately.

Reconstruction of a town house

And there is also a specific project: the (re) construction of a community center. “They have nothing to meet. That would be very important, ”says Scheuerer. It is about strengthening social interaction again after the terrible events. This is only a drop in the ocean, admits the Ohlstadt community chief, but at least it is a start. In Kreuzberg, a district of the Altenahr community, everything that had previously given space to social life was wiped out - not only the community center, but also the sports field, the inn and the old village center.

District Administrator Anton Speer (Free Voters) is hoping for a large number of donations - possibly also the proceeds of a benefit auction. The district will also let something jump. “The flood disaster in North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate affected us all deeply. In the disaster areas, billions in damage have been caused, and it will take years before the infrastructure is restored, ”explains the Unterammergau resident. He is therefore very pleased that the district communities want to help with the reconstruction.

Despite the exertion and willingness to help, things are progressing slowly in Kreuzberg: “We are working hard to restore our infrastructure, but unfortunately not always in a coordinated manner,” Hupperich and von Boeselager describe the situation. Time is of the essence, because autumn and winter are just around the corner. According to their statements, most of the buildings do not yet have running water. And the electricity has to be generated with the help of a large, central generator. 110 of the 145 houses were affected as a result of the flood. Eight were completely destroyed, twelve have yet to be demolished. Currently only 50 people live in the village. Everyone else stayed with helpful families or vacated apartments in the area.

The donations can be transferred to the account of the Garmisch-Partenkirchen District Office with the

bank account DE87 7035 0000 0000 0280 01

. The purpose that must be stated is:

"Flutopferhilfe Kreuzberg eV - FAD 59920".

The district tax administration issues the donation confirmations. For this, the full name and address must be given - ideally by email to finanzverwal tung@lra-gap.de. A simplified proof of donation, such as a bank statement, is sufficient for the tax office for amounts under EUR 300. Upon special request, there are also confirmations for lower amounts.
