In Afghanistan, the Taliban seized millions of dollars in cash and gold bars.

As a value, the central bank controlled by the new rulers stated more than twelve million US dollars (about 10.2 million euros).

Money and gold were found in the homes of members of the previous government and former senior officials, it said.

The former Vice President Amrullah Saleh was named by name.

Saleh declared himself incumbent President of Afghanistan last month after former President Ashraf Ghani fled.

Since the Taliban came to power in mid-August, he has been trying to organize resistance against the extremists in the Punjir province (read more here).

The exact amount allegedly confiscated from Saleh's house was not disclosed.

A senior Taliban claimed on Twitter that more than $ 6 million in cash and 18 gold bars had been found at Saleh.

Saleh himself did not initially comment.

His current whereabouts are unknown.

Previously, Afghanistan's former ambassador to Tajikistan, Mohammed Sahir Agbar, claimed that Ghani took $ 169 million with him when he escaped.

The ex-president rejected this.

According to media reports, the central bank also asked banks to freeze the accounts of former officials.

In the past few days there have been repeated clashes in the Punjir Valley between the Taliban and rebels under the leadership of Saleh and Ahmad Massud, the son of the resistance fighter Ahmed Shah Massud, known as the "Lion of the Punjir Valley".

The Taliban claim that they now control the area, but the exact location is unclear.

The mountainous region around 100 kilometers northeast of the capital Kabul is considered difficult to conquer.
