China has condemned the "completely irresponsible" deal between the United States and Australia over the latter's acquisition of nuclear-powered American submarines as part of "cooperation" between the two countries that also includes Britain.
"Cooperation between the United States, Britain and Australia in the field of nuclear submarines seriously destabilizes regional peace and stability, intensifies the arms race, and undermines international efforts toward non-proliferation of nuclear weapons," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told reporters today, according to AFP.
Yesterday, Washington announced the formation of a "strategic security alliance" in the Indo-Pacific region, including London and Canberra, which announced its intention to build nuclear-powered submarines with the help of the United States and Britain.
