A lawyer who advised Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential campaign was charged on Thursday.
Michael Sussmann is accused of having made false statements during the investigation into Donald Trump's possible involvement in Russia in the 2016 election campaign, the prosecutor said.
Accordingly, when Sussmann gave the FBI investigators information about possible connections between the Russian Alfa Bank and Trump's company, Sussmann kept quiet about his work for Clinton's campaign team.
Rather, Sussmann appeared "as a good citizen," according to the indictment.
Sussmann's attorneys said her client was a highly respected national security attorney who previously worked in the Justice Department under both Republican and Democratic governments.
They are confident that he will restore his reputation in the process.
Sussmann is the second person to be charged after the second investigation into Russia began, led by John Durham.
Trump's Attorney General William Barr launched the investigation in 2019.
Durham should investigate the background of the investigation under Special Counsel Robert Mueller.
Critics saw it as an attempt to discredit his investigation.
However, US President Biden did not recall Durham after he took office.
When Sussmann gave his information to the FBI in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election, James Comey was its director.
Comey had launched an investigation to investigate contacts between Trump's campaign team and Russia.
After Trump's dismissal of Comey in May 2017, Robert Mueller's investigation continued.
