Dießen / Dettenschwang - In the end, the syringe brought relief: an eagle owl that was captured in Dettenschwang at the beginning of August has now been put to sleep.

The nocturnal bird of prey had nasty foot ulcers that could no longer be healed.

The animal was believed to have been kept illegally.

As district office spokesman Wolfgang Müller explains, a member of the LBV district group Landsberg had been informed that there was an injured "bird of prey" in the district of Dießen. The bird eventually turned out to be a female eagle owl. An injury to the left leg could already be found after the capture.

The bird conservationists then arranged for the owl to be admitted to the LMU Bird Clinic in Oberschleißheim via the Freising rescue station - for immediate care.

Easier said than done.

Because on closer examination, advanced ulcers were diagnosed on both feet.

"The eagle owl could barely move its tens and claws", describes Müller, "the foot bones were already attacked." After the veterinarians ruled out recovery, the eagle owl had to be put down for animal welfare reasons.

Illegal attitude

The clinical picture of the eagle owl suggests that the animal is kept illegally and that the species and animal protection laws and requirements have not been observed. Now the nature conservation authority is looking for the eagle owl keeper. Information from the population will be received by calling 08191 / 129-1473 and -1575.
