STRASBOURG -
"Femicide is the most extreme form of gender-based violence against women and girls".
This was stated by the European Parliament which today adopted a legislative initiative calling for a law and targeted policies to tackle all forms of
gender-based
violence and
discrimination, against women and girls, but also against LGBTIQ + people, both offline than online
.
Furthermore, MEPs stress that "even denying assistance to safe and legal abortion is a form of gender-based violence".
In addition to the many
negative personal, social and economic effects of gender-based violence
, MEPs note that the situation has been exacerbated with the pandemic and that the failure to respond to the lack of trust on the part of victims of gender-based violence towards the law enforcement and the judiciary is an element that contributes significantly to the low number of complaints.
The Eurochamber calls on the Commission to list gender-based violence as a
new sphere of crime
under the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, along with other crimes that need to be fought on a common basis such as trafficking in human beings, drugs and of weapons, cybercrime and terrorism. The text was approved with 427 votes in favor, 119 against and 140 abstentions.
