Tragedy on the eve of Yom Kippur: A 12-year-old boy was killed last night at 19:00 by a private vehicle while riding his bicycle on Road 4 near an interchange.

Police have begun investigating the circumstances of the accident.

According to medical sources, the cyclist, a resident of Ramat Gan who was supposed to celebrate a bar mitzvah in about a month, was rushed to Wolfson Medical Center in critical condition, but was forced to determine his death after resuscitation attempts.

The driver of the car, a resident of Be'er Ya'akov in his 40s, was arrested for questioning by Tel Aviv District Police investigators on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

During the holiday, Magen David Adom paramedics rushed to provide medical care to 2,583 people across the country, of whom 1,838 were evacuated for further treatment in hospitals.

In addition, last night an 11-and-a-half-year-old cyclist from Gedera, who was hit by a jeep near Beit Elazari, arrived at the children's emergency room at Kaplan Medical Center.

The boy suffers from a head injury and other injuries, is defined as in fair condition, and was hospitalized in the pediatric ward for further treatment and supervision.

During Yom Kippur, about 20 adults and 34 children with limb injuries, cuts and fractures due to cycling and scooters were treated at the General Hospital and the Children's Hospital at Kaplan Hospital. Most of them were in a light condition and were released to their homes.

In all, 226 people were injured and in need of medical treatment due to a riding injury on bicycles, skates, scooters and skateboards, of which 5 were moderate.

MDA teams were also called to transfer 135 midwives to hospitals, 8 of whom were born by MDA teams in the cities of Elad, Beitar Illit, Bnei Brak, Barkan, Jerusalem, Modi'in Illit, Ein El Assad and Tel Aviv. MDA's blood services provided hospitals in the country with 128 doses and blood components during Yom Kippur.
