The “Dachsbergsche Volksbeschreibung” for Wolfratshausen is a gem from an archival record - and is now just waiting for a historian to evaluate it.

The “Dachsbergsche Volksbeschreibung” for Wolfratshausen is a gem from an archival record - and is now just waiting for a historian to evaluate it.

Wolfratshausen

- The city has recently received a remarkable document.

It is about an exact listing of the Wolfratshausen population from the year 1770. For historians who want to learn something about this time, it is of the greatest interest.

“I assume that this will be evaluated soon,” says archivist Simon Kalleder.

It would be a shame if not.

It's a treasure trove.

The large-format piece of paper is a donation from Weilheim.

The archivist there, Dr.

Joachim Häberlein came across it when he once again picked up the 40,000 unregistered council files of his city.

In doing so, he came across a city that begins with "W", but is not Weilheim - but Wolfratshausen.

“Nobody knows how she got there,” he says.

As it is his conviction that archives should be kept where researchers are looking for them, he brought the certificate to Loisachstadt - much to the delight of Simon Kalleder.

“This generosity cannot be taken for granted at all,” he says.

The Kurrent script is razor sharp

Just the sight made the Wolfratshauser Archivist's heart beat faster: the accurate Kurrent script of a Bavarian official on high-quality handmade paper. The iron gall ink, which was common at the time, apparently had exactly the right mixing ratio, because the letters have neither melted nor etched into the paper over the past 250 years, keyword ink corrosion. In a word: a gem from an archival document.

To understand the background, you have to know: Bavaria, like all of Europe, suffered from a famine in 1770 with hundreds of thousands of deaths.

It is related to a "Little Ice Age", there were several extremely cold winters and devastating rainfall.

To get an overview, the Bavarian Elector Max III.

Joseph took his officials out into the country.

The technical term among historians for this is: Dachsberg's folk description.

By the way: Such a document is by no means available for all cities.

Weilheim, for example, does not have it.

Practically an old Excel spreadsheet

The ancient name of the document can be found on the top left: “Summarisches Tabell des sich im Churfürstl. Market Wolfratshausen located status realis et personalis, written anno 1770 ”. “Realis” means the professions practiced in Loisachstadt at that time, and “personalis” means the population. Basically it is a handwritten Excel spreadsheet: the professions (pastor, raft people, council servant and so on) run from top to bottom on the left, the marital status (unmarried, married, children and so on) from the top left To the right. The appropriate box is ticked in the middle, the numbers are summarized in the lower right corner. These statistics were intended for the electoral administration in Munich. It should be the basis for further action in a time of crisis.

Just looking at the 70 professions listed lets the Wolfratshauser Stadtgesellschaft of yore come to life.

The certificate names 28 "raftsmen" (raftsmen), 18 Austrägler (delivery farmers), 12 shopkeepers (traders), 9 shoemakers, 9 butchers, 7 bakers, 4 weavers, 3 dyers, 2 carpenters and one fishmonger, iron dealer, braid maker, bather each (Hairdresser), schoolmaster and council servant.

Nothing would have happened in Loisachstadt without the “Tagwerker” (day laborers), of whom 102 were apparently in the city.

Most of them worked in-house, more or less in the home office.

In any case, the “table” names only four town houses without any business.

And now?

Will the Weilheim donation be integrated into the 400 linear meters of archive material that Simon Kalleder watches over on Bahnhofstrasse?

Until at some point a historian comes and evaluates them.
