Documentation of the assassination of Brigadier General Northern Gaza in Islamic Jihad, Hassam Abu Haravid (IDF Spokesman)

The basis for the establishment of Islamic Jihad began with the Islamic Revolution in Iran in the late 1970s and Khomeini's rise to power. The spirit that fueled the Muslim Brotherhood's military activity in Egypt, culminating in the assassination of President Anwar Sadat in 1981, also inspired the organization, as well as the military activity of political Islam in Sudan, which led to the establishment of a Sharia law-based military regime.

A small group of students in Egypt formed the small and extremist organization, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (GAP). Shiite, in order to liberate Palestine from Israel and take a violent approach - by way of terrorism.

This approach helped connect with Iran, which would later lead to a permanent pipeline for the transfer of funds from Tehran to the territories.

In the years 1986-1987, jihad operatives led murderous attacks that overshadowed Hamas' terrorism, which was initially perceived as more social than religious.

The terror perpetrated by the GAP helped raise funds, but years later led to the expulsion of senior members of the organization from the Occupied Territories to Lebanon, including Shakaki. The organization and its senior members, while Hani Abed, one of the organization's leaders in Gaza, was killed in a car bomb blast.

Senior Islamic Jihad figures were surprised by the revelation of the senior wanted man's whereabouts, claiming that the Palestinian Authority had assisted in his assassination. Accordingly, at his funeral, cries of "traitor" were heard towards Yasser Arafat. A few weeks later, heavy exchanges of fire took place between PA officials and Islamic Jihad operatives. However, the organization decided to change patterns of action, and send suicide bombers to targets deep in Israel. The most painful operation took place in early 1995, when two terrorists exploded in a nearby house and killed 21 soldiers and a civilian.

In response to the attack, Israel decided to change the rules of the game, and in October of that year, Dr. Shakaki was killed in Malta by gunfire attributed to Mossad fighters. A few years ago, his medical condition deteriorated and the responsibility was transferred to a very extreme official: Ziad Nahallah, who lives in Damascus.

In the early 2000s, a very broad terrorist infrastructure of the Islamic Jihad in Samaria was exposed, which carried out a very large series of suicide bombings throughout Israel, including the inferno attack at Dizengoff Center in Tel Aviv during the Purim march.

The heavy price has led to the promotion of targeted counterterrorism policies and the construction of the barrier at the seam line.

In October 2000, Iyad Hardan, a resident of Araba in the Jenin district, was released from Israeli prison and served a prison sentence for security offenses. Hardan was then defined as the head of the military wing of Islamic Jihad in Jenin, following the assassination of Anwar Hamran. He worked to carry out terrorist attacks, including car bombs in the Mahane Yehuda market and in the Talpiot neighborhood of Jerusalem. On April 5, 2001, he was released from a Palestinian prison, entered a public telephone booth in Jenin near the city hall, and when he picked up the phone, a charge was detonated against him that left him no chance of surviving.

According to veteran IDF sources, in those months there was a manhunt for the GAP quartet in Jenin. At first, the GSS managed to uncover the hiding place of Wael Assaf and Assad Daka and a paratrooper force surrounded him and killed them. However, the other two, Muhammad Tualba and Thabet Mardawi, were more sophisticated. Finally hands,Arrested at the end of a manhunt that lasted for years and sentenced to lengthy life sentences.

Iran has continued to inject money into Judea and Samaria over the years, and in parallel with the continuation of the attacks, including the suicide bombing of a charming restaurant in Haifa in 2003 in which 21 civilians were killed, built the organization's power in the Gaza Strip. Military, salaries for activists and even financing social activities and financial support for the families of the killed activists.

In January 2012, the GSS again exposed a wide range of Islamic Jihad infrastructure in the Jenin area, which received extensive assistance from the organization's headquarters in Syria. The investigations helped build a picture of the restoration of infrastructure in Jenin.

Islamic Jihad recruited from among the students active activists with an extremist and rigid ideology towards Israel.

In the last decade, he has carried out operations that amounted to attempts to carry out shooting attacks in the territories and rocket fire.

At the same time, he did not stop carrying out sophisticated attacks, which include tunnels and even the sending of barrels from the sea to the shores of Israel.

The most prominent figure in the last decade was the commander of the Northern Brigade in the Gaza Strip, Baha'u Abu al-Ata, who was called "explosives" by senior IDF officials. A conference of activists of the then Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, in Ashdod, in response to which Israel sent threatening messages through the Egyptian mediator, according to which if al-'Ata does not stop his actions, he will pay with his life

. The GSS carried out a targeted assassination operation during which al-'Ata was killed. According to foreign reports, that night the Israeli Air Force in Syria attacked the home of Akram Ajuri, the organization's deputy secretary general Ziad Nahala. Ajuri survived, but his son and bodyguard were killed. In 2020, the GSS and the IDF increased the pressure On the ground, and began to carry out a wave of arrests that included more than twenty terrorist operatives, including senior members of the organization mainly in the Jenin area,Hebron and Bethlehem.

The next clash between the IDF and Islamic Jihad took place in Operation Wall Guard. Despite the large budget and continuous assistance from Iran and Hezbollah to the organization, its operatives were unable to carry out quality attacks against Israel and its contribution to terrorism was very low. Of the organization in Gaza, Samah 'Abd al-Mamluk who was hiding in an apartment in the heart of Gaza City, and a few days later the commander of the Northern Brigade, Hassam Abu Harbid, was also assassinated.

Meanwhile, the Islamic Jihad's headquarters in Syria continued to press to carry out attacks, and accordingly the infrastructure in Jenin raised its head.

In the past year, every IDF entry into the city's refugee camp has been accompanied by massive gunfire from Islamic Jihad militants. additional.

About a month ago, an undercover force from the Border Police entered the heart of the camp and arrested the organization's activists.

In response, live ammunition was fired at the fighters from several directions, and they were forced to return fire, killing four activists within minutes.

By order of the headquarters in Damascus, the organization responded by launching rockets from the Gaza Strip at Israel.

The struggle between Israel and the terrorist organization is currently continuing, as part of the manhunt for the two Islamic Jihad operatives, who escaped from Gilboa prison together with senior Tanzim official Zakaria Zabeidi and have not yet been captured.

The high compartmentalization and the strict escape plan did not surprise officials in the IDF and the defense establishment, as it is known that this is an organization that educates its people to high secrecy

. The past shows that a large number of Islamic Jihad militants will protect the prisoners if they manage to reach the Jenin refugee camp, and the battle expected for the IDF in one of the most crowded places in Judea and Samaria will be complex and difficult.

Defense officials estimate that the security prisoners will try to return to the space they are very familiar with.

Hence also the assessment in the defense establishment that Zabeidi was included in the escape plan due to his ability to receive assistance and protection from the people of the refugee camp in the city.
