The district of Munich will need thousands of care places and workers in the coming years.

The demand is increasing massively.

The search for personnel poses major challenges for associations.

District

- A young nurse earns around 3000 euros in the Munich district - gross mind you.

Little money for a job that is physically demanding: Nurses also toil at night and on weekends, plus emotional stress.

The profession is therefore unattractive for many job seekers.

On the other hand, the industry is desperately looking for caregivers.

In less than 20 years, the district needs almost 3,400 nurses, almost 1,300 workers more than in 2017. The number of people in need of care is increasing massively.

This concludes with an expert report by the research institute IGES on behalf of the Bavarian Ministry of Care.

According to the study, there will be over 13,300 people in need of care in the district in 2040, almost 4,800 more than in 2017. The experts estimated 2017 as the base year.

District Office sees itself "very well positioned"

Above all, the number of people who need permanent full inpatient care will increase massively in the coming decades.

By 2040, more than 2,300 new places must be created in nursing homes for those in need of care.

The district administration is aware of this development, "if you consider the population growth on the one hand and the demographic development on the other".

However, the district office sees itself as "very well positioned" for the challenges.

In addition, there is currently no "supply backlog", according to a spokeswoman for the authorities.

So much for the numbers.

“The big problem in the region is the lack of nursing staff,” says Marianne Böhme.

She is the Caritas department head for outpatient care in the region.

“The situation in outpatient care is difficult,” she says.

Skilled workers are difficult to find.

According to the IGES report, outpatient care in the district will need almost 600 skilled workers in four years - 86 more than in 2017.

That is why Caritas is constantly looking for carers in this country.

It trains its own trainees and accepts many interns from hospitals every year.

Caritas is trying to attract workers with innovative advertising on the Internet: people looking for a job can "match" themselves with a suitable job - as is the case with the Tinder dating platform, explains Böhme.

The welfare association tries to retain future employees.

One problem, however, is payment.

Nursing wages: 3000 euros - gross

Caritas pays newly qualified nursing professionals a gross base salary of around 3,000 euros, says Böhme.

In addition, there would be surcharges such as shift allowances and vacation pay.

Caritas would pay some of the highest salaries in Munich.

Still: "Care should be paid better," she says.

Caritas is being refinanced by health insurances, "more money has to come from there," said Böhme.

The poor pay leads to another problem, especially in the Munich region: rents and house prices that are too expensive.

“We get a lot of inquiries as to whether we are providing apartments,” reports Böhme.

Caritas doesn't do that.

It would help the welfare association “massively” in recruiting employees if housing were made available, says Böhme.

For example from municipalities.

Relatives face major challenges

The Kirchheim community, for example, completed a new residential building in Heimstetten in July.

The square meter costs ten euros here.

There are also caregivers among the tenants.

There are far too few social construction projects like this in the district for all carers to get an apartment.

Relatives also face major challenges, in addition to the financial burden: in 2040 they will care for almost 5,200 old and sick people at home.

This is what the IGES study predicts.

The victims of this development are women too.

Often it is they who take care of family members in need of care - in addition to their job and caring for their own core family.
