A hundred people who believed they had seen Martín Ezequiel Álvarez Giaccio have notified the Mossos in three weeks of searching

Martín Ezequiel Álvarez Giaccio, the man who killed his two-year-old son in a hotel in Barcelona and fled, committed suicide within hours of committing the crime. The Mossos d'Esquadra located his body on Wednesday, after three weeks of intense search in which they received more than a hundred notices from citizens who believed they had seen him. The calls were useless because Álvarez had taken his own life that same night of August 24: the underwater police unit found his body hanging from a tree in a wooded area with difficult access in the delta of the Llobregat river, next to the El Prat airport.

The Mossos spokesman commissioner, Joan Carles Molinero, and the head of investigation of Barcelona, the inspector Josep Naharro, have offered this Thursday more details about the search for Álvarez, who since the events occurred on August 24 had become a priority for the body.

The Mossos mobilized all their units and tried to find him "by land, sea and air," described the inspector, in a fight against the clock in which helicopters and drones have been used.

The surveillance cameras of the Concordia hotel, in Paral·lel, showed Álvarez's flight. After killing his two-year-old son to get revenge on his wife, who had separated from him, the man went outside dressed in sports clothes and left the hotel by jumping over the pool fence. Then he went to the Barcelona airport, where he lost track of it. Investigators do not know why he went to El Prat, although they do not believe that he intended to leave the country. "One hypothesis is that he would like to mislead us, but we do not know for sure," explained Naharro.

Just two days later, the Mossos, according to the judge who led the investigation of the case, released Álvarez's photograph and identity and requested citizen collaboration. In three weeks, they have received around a hundred calls about possible "sightings" of the man in Catalonia. "All the information has been investigated and worked on," explained Commissioner Molinero. A citizen explained that he had seen a man hitchhiking near Barcelona. The Mossos followed the vehicle that picked up the man and identified him: he was a tourist returning to Holland. Another person called to explain that he saw someone suspicious sleeping in the woods. A farmer alerted that someone had stolen the fruit and suspected that it was the father of the murdered minor.

The police have shown their appreciation to the public, although none of the leads led to Álvarez. His body had been, for a few hours after the events, in an area of very difficult access next to the road that leads to the El Prat airport services area. “The coroner has not yet been able to determine the day [of the suicide]. But his death can be adjusted to the same night of the events or in hours after the death of the child ”, explained Naharro.

The underwater unit had been combing the area of the Llobregat delta for days and on Wednesday, around 1:15 p.m., they found the body.

From the first moment, the Mossos suspected that it was Álvarez, although until this Thursday they have not been able to verify his identity by checking his fingerprints.

The day before, however, the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC) stated that Álvarez had been “fully” identified.

During this time of search, the Mossos have offered protection 24 hours a day to Álvarez's ex-wife and mother of the deceased child.

"We have done so given the seriousness of the events and without knowing where the main investigated was," explained Naharro, who has also detailed that he has been offered psychological assistance.
