Two people were killed and dozens injured in an earthquake that struck at dawn today in the shallow depths of southwest China's Sichuan Province.
The China Seismological Center said the quake had a magnitude of 6 and struck at a depth of 10 km in Luxian District, about 120 km southwest of the sprawling metropolis of Chongqing, home to about 30 million people.
Authorities in Luxian District said the quake killed two people, seriously injured three, and lightly injured 50 others, collapsing 22 houses, damaging dozens of houses, and interrupting communications in some parts of the area.
China is constantly witnessing earthquakes, especially in its mountainous regions in the west and southwest of the country. In 2008, a 7.9-magnitude earthquake struck Sichuan Province, leaving 87,000 people dead or missing.
