The Wahl-O-Mat can help with the choice - when will it be published and how does it work?

  • Before the federal election on September 26, 2021, a Wahl-O-Mat was published at the beginning of September.

  • With this online tool, interested parties can compare their own political positions with those of the parties.

  • In this article you will find the new Wahl-O-Mat for the federal election 2021 - it was published on September 2nd.

Berlin - The 2021 federal election will be the highlight of this year's super election year. Six parties have sat in the Bundestag since 2017: CDU / CSU, SPD, AfD, FDP, Left and Greens have been voting on laws and discussing current issues for almost four years. The election at that time had changed the German parliament in its distribution of seats quite a bit, because the AfD and FDP managed to move in in 2017 with significant gains compared to the previous election. The Union, on the other hand, lost the most votes with over eight percentage points, but the SPD also had to cope with the loss of over five points. Although the two fared significantly worse than before, the Union and Social Democrats have been ruling the country since then, supported by a parliamentary majority.

That could change again in autumn, because the date of the federal election in 2021 is on September 26th. The ballot paper will then not only contain the CDU / CSU, SPD, AfD, FDP, Left and Greens, but also a few other parties.

In 2017, more than 40 parties were allowed to vote.

Federal election 2021: how does Wahl-O-Mat work?

The Wahl-O-Mat shows a total of 38 political statements on different areas.

This can include, for example, environmental, education, health, labor or defense policy.

For each statement, the user can then choose whether one agrees or disagrees, is neutral about it or whether one would like to skip the thesis.

When everything has been answered, users can give the statements a special weight, for example because someone thinks a topic is particularly important.

The result then shows a percentage that indicates how much you agree with the party and its positions.

Different groupings can be selected, compared and individual topics examined in more detail.

In addition, the Wahl-O-Mat offers brief profiles of the parties and other information for the Bundestag election.

Wahl-O-Mat: How is the question-and-answer tool created before the federal election?

The statements of the Wahl-O-Mats are worked out by young voters, political scientists, statisticians and other experts. In a first editorial round, 80 theses emerge from the election manifestos of the approved parties. These are then sent to the parties for a response. Your reasons and answers can be viewed later in Wahl-O-Mat. The editorial team then selects the final 38 theses. Above all, theses are picked out which make the different standpoints of the parties particularly clear and which depict central issues of the election.

The Wahl-O-Mat has existed in Germany since 2002. For the super election year, the makers have given it a new design and more specific analysis options.

Because the popularity is great, the number of users has recently increased: According to the Federal Agency for Civic Education, the Wahl-O-Mat had been used a total of 15.7 million times by election day for the 2017 federal election.

Ultimately, however, Wahl-O-Mat cannot deliver a specific voting decision for the federal election in 2021, as the developers always emphasized.

But it can be a support for decision-making and an impetus as to which party eligible voters could take a closer look at.
