Apple will release iOS 15, its long-awaited iPhone and iPad operating system, on September 20.

The iOS 15 release date was confirmed in an Apple press release regarding the new line of iPhones that will go on sale on Friday.

As usual, the new version of iOS will be available for free download when it launches.

Apple first gave users a glimpse of iOS 15 in June at its annual developer conference, where it showcased a variety of new features, including updates to video calling in FaceTime and digital keys in Apple Wallet.

In FaceTime, Apple will offer new options for users to watch movies or listen to music together during a call.

It's also introducing a new grid view to better convey each face on a call.

Android and Windows users will also be able to join FaceTime calls for the first time.

Apple is also rolling out updates to its mobile wallet that will allow users to unlock everything from their home to their hotel room with in-app digital keys.

The company recently announced a multi-state partnership that allows people to add their driver's license or state IDs to their Apple Wallet for use at airport security checkpoints.

A variety of new security features are also included in iOS 15, such as a so-called "email privacy protection." The email application on Apple devices will hide users 'IP addresses and their location, so companies that send emails cannot link that information to users' other online activities. Also, senders cannot see when or when users open their email.

For iPad users, the updated operating system includes tools to make it easier to work on the go.

Those who own the Apple tablet will soon be able to place widgets between the applications on their home screen, such as widgets for contacts or Apple TV, including new larger formats made for the iPad screen.
