A drone transporting a contraband package to a
Virginia correctional facility
in the United States, dropped its valuable content by mistake in the least desired place: a school that was attached to the jail.
According to the
Brunswick County
Sheriff's Office
, it
was the director of the facility who called police to alert them that "a suspicious package had fallen on the school grounds."
In a
post
, county police confirmed that the drone dropped the package at 5:40 a.m. on Monday, September 13, and that, according to witnesses, it managed to land forcibly near the area.
At that moment, a black vehicle went to the school parking area where the drone had been parked and took it away.
The wrappers had several kilos of marijuana.
Alerted, the policemen interviewed witnesses and arrived in time to collect the package.
They all concluded that the destination of the mysterious packaging was the adjacent property, the
Lawrenceville Correctional Center
, which is operated by a private company called the GEO Group.
"Once the package was returned to our office, it was opened and contained
several bricks of marijuana
and tobacco and also included three cell phones and a USB-C to lightning converter," Sheriff BKRoberts said.
Authorities believe that the drone had to abort its mission after suffering
some mechanical failure
, then it landed in the parking lot of the Brunswick Academy,
where it "discarded" its contents
.
Inside the package were two cell phones that were going to end up in the hands of criminals.
This is not the first time that the agents discover this type of maneuver and they assure that
they have
already
run into "dozens" of similar attempts.
