The campaign alliance “Radentscheid Freising” handed over a box full of signatures to Mayor Eschenbacher.

The representatives demand a bundle of measures.

Freising

- 4750 signatures - a whole box full - was presented to Mayor Tobias Eschenbacher on Thursday evening. According to its own statement, the non-partisan campaign alliance “Radentscheid Freising” has “achieved a decisive milestone”. The fact that around 80 percent more signatures for the citizens' petition were collected than necessary was "a strong signal to the Freising politicians" and to the mayor. “Tobi, do something!” Read one of the signs that had been brought to the signature handover.

The desire, which started with a lot of vigor in February 2020, was interrupted twice by the corona lockdowns.

In the past few weeks in particular, however, "an unexpected rush of people willing to sign" has been observed, the action alliance describes.

Now it is hoped and expected that the city council will accept the request.

Action alliance calls for an efficient cycle priority network

The Freisinger Radentscheid calls for the consistent mitigation of danger spots by using Tempo 30 or structurally separated cycle paths of sufficient width.

And all of this on a continuous, high-performance cycle priority network in accordance with the “target network for cycle traffic” in the Freising mobility concept, which was approved by the city council in 2018.

In addition, dangerous crossings and junctions are to be defused and sufficient parking space for bicycles and cargo bikes is to be created - which is especially important in the inner city area to avoid conflicts.

In addition, supra-local cycle superhighways to important destinations in the district or in neighboring districts are to be promoted.

40 percent of the people of Freising cycle in the city center

So far, the action alliance criticizes the promotion of cycling in Freising only "in homeopathic doses".

For about a decade there has been continuous discussion about the many existing problem areas and commissioning reports, concepts and planning.

"But when the implementation is due, nothing decisive is going ahead", so the complaint of many signatories.

And this despite the fact that in Freising an unusually high number of inner-city journeys are already made by bike: in 2018, according to an official survey, that was around 40 percent, and in the meantime - as a result of the pandemic - it could even be significantly more.

With the now initiated Freisinger Radentscheid, the city council and citizens would now have the opportunity to set the course again: more space and safety for more and more cyclists with an acceptable loss of comfort for vehicle users.
