The Lenggries parish church of St. Jakob will celebrate its 300th anniversary in September 2022.

Many activities will be offered in the coming months.

Lenggries

- September 15, 2022 will be the 300th anniversary of the inauguration of the church.

The large new building caused quite a stir in the region at the time: with a length of 45 meters, a width of 15.5 meters and a height of 15.7 meters, the church has a considerable dimension and is popularly known as the “Dom im Isarwinkel “.

The interior is also well worth seeing.

"The first church in Lenggries was probably built around the year 1200," reports church caretaker Peter Dichtl.

In the 15th century the church was extended in the Gothic style.

According to Dichtl, the seated figure of the apostle James from the altar from 1515 - it is still carried during the Corpus Christi procession today - as well as two altar wings, which are located in the Maria-Hilf chapel, have been preserved.

"At the beginning of the 18th century, the church proved to be increasingly dilapidated," said Dichtl.

Count Ferdinand Josef von Herwarth von Hohenburg Castle advocated a new building.

"As the lord of the court, he covered the majority of the costs and also financed the construction of the Isar bridge so that the farmers on the left bank of the Isar could also deliver material," reports Dichtl.

Work on the interior was continued until 1728

In order to be able to build the new, significantly larger church and create a new cemetery, the "Kirchmairhof" had to be demolished, which stood roughly on the site of today's church tower.

Work began in May 1721, and it was finished by September 1722 - but not the church tower yet.

This was not completed until 1724.

Work on the interior of the church continued until 1728.

The prince-bishop of Freising, Johannes Franz von Eckher, inaugurated the church on September 15, 1722.

And none other than Cardinal Reinhard Marx will celebrate the 300th anniversary service with the Lenggries family on Sunday, September 11th, 2022.

Afterwards there is a parish festival.

There is a lot to do in the anniversary year

Those responsible for the anniversary year - in addition to the pastor, members from the church administration and parish council have come together to form a festival committee - have been working on various activities since May, reports Kirchenpfleger Dichtl. Now it is there. It consists of many musical elements with concerts by the brass band and church choir as well as Advent and Marian singing. There are also events for children and young people, pilgrimage hikes to the chapels and, on May 8, a spiritual lecture by Father Anselm Grün. The anniversary year will open on Sunday, September 19, with a festive divine service with Auxiliary Bishop Wolfgang Bischof. In the afternoon there is a concert for trumpet and organ with Josef Kronwitter and Alexander Pointner (5 p.m.).

For Pastor Josef Kraller, the place of prayer is in the foreground.

“The eternal light burns day and night as a sign that Christ is always present.

In the jubilee we want to realign ourselves to Christ ”, says the pastor.

"The prayer through the night should therefore be something special, which is always celebrated from the first Thursday of the month to Friday in the anniversary year."

Anniversary beer and anniversary sausage

The festival committee has prepared an anniversary year for all the senses. After all, the celebration should also go through the body and stomach - there is special bread, beer and sausage, reports Dichtl: “The Lenggries bakers provide a bread of their choice with a wafer that adorns the logo. The butchers sell an anniversary sausage with the logo as a sticker. ”In addition, an anniversary beer was brewed in Reutberg, which is now available in the Lenggries beverage markets. The bottles bear the special parish church label. "We don't earn anything from this, on the contrary: We invest in PR, because we want to celebrate the anniversary with everyone from Lenggries and bring it to every household," says administration manager Andrea Fahrner.

In the summer there will be a commemorative publication on church history. The church groups and associations are also presented there. That was also there 100 years ago. Something special is now that, thanks to digitalization, the ringing of the old bells that were called up for the war in 1942 will be made audible on a sound carrier.

At the same time as the anniversary year, the renovation work on the parish church is in the active phase.

The carpentry work on the roof structure is to take place next winter, and the church roof will be re-covered in the course of the next year.

“Unfortunately, the original schedule could not be adhered to,” says Dichtl regretfully.

“Instead of finishing the exterior and interior renovation in 2022, work on the roof will not start until 2022, while the interior renovation will probably be a long time coming.” If you look at the history of the church, you come full circle: because 1722 was still there not everything is perfect.

Registration for the festival service

For the service on Sunday, September 19, with Auxiliary Bishop Wolfgang Bischof at 9.30 a.m., you have to register due to the Corona requirements.

This is possible in the morning in the parish office on 0 80 42/87 89.
