Berlin - In the 2021 federal election, the polling stations will be open to all eligible voters on election day (September 26th) from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Without a specific reason, however, voters are also able to submit their voting slip by post.

Filling out the voting slip is possible weeks before the election and can easily be done from home.

To vote by post, the person entitled to vote only needs to apply for a voting slip.

Eligible voters should have received voting notification for the federal election by September 5th - the relevant documents have been sent out since August 16th.

Those who do not receive it should contact their own congregation as soon as possible.

The request for postal voting is on the back of the voting notification.

You fill out the application and send it back to the respective municipality.

You will then receive a ballot paper and a voting slip.

However, you can apply for your postal voting documents long in advance from your municipality.

This can be done either in person or via email or fax and often online.

Bundestag election 2021: received postal voting documents - how does the election work?

If you have applied for a postal voting slip, there are two options.

You can either return your completed documents to your electoral authority by post free of charge or vote directly at an electoral office.

The letter from the electoral authority contains the following documents:

  • Instructions on how to vote by postal vote

  • A ballot paper to vote on

  • A blue envelope with no address

  • A red envelope with the address of the electoral authority

  • A ballot

First, put two crosses on the ballot paper for the federal election in 2021. One for the first vote, with which you can vote for a direct candidate, and one for the second vote, with which you can vote for a specific party.

Then put the ticked ballot paper in the blank blue envelope.

This is to ensure that your choice remains secret.

Sign the ballot paper and put it together with the blue envelope in the red envelope with the address of the electoral authority on it.

You can now simply throw the envelope into a post office mailbox.

Send the letter at least three days before the election, but even earlier so that it arrives on time.

You do not need to postage it.

Postal voting is free of charge.

Postal votes for the 2021 federal election are also possible from abroad

However, if you use the postal voting option for the 2021 federal election from abroad, you have to pay the postage to Germany yourself. In this case, one must also ensure that the documents are sent out earlier so that they are available to the responsible body in good time on election Sunday. If the letter arrives after 6 p.m. on election Sunday (September 26th), it will no longer be considered for the election.

Germans who live abroad and are no longer registered in Germany can also take part in the federal election. To do this, they must submit a written application for entry in the electoral roll of the responsible municipality before the election. So-called “Germans abroad” have the right to vote if, after reaching the age of 14, they “have lived in the Federal Republic of Germany for at least three consecutive months and this stay was not more than 25 years ago” or “if they are personally and directly familiar with for other reasons the political conditions in the Federal Republic of Germany and are affected by them ".
