Wallgau - As a well-known Bavarian-Tyrolean folk song says, “Da Summa is aussi, I go to Doi. Pfiadi Gott mei liabe Oima, Pfiadi Gott Tausendmoi! ”That's how it is in early autumn, when the leaves slowly turn color and the morning mist hovers over the valleys, time for the grazing animals to return to the valley. And so the annual cattle drive of the Wallgau pasture community took place last Saturday.

Above all, shepherd Johannes Tiefenbrunner, the "Beck'n Hannes" led his cattle safely from the Wallgauer Alm back to the community barn on the Finz.

He was accompanied by the local farmers, who have entrusted him with around 65 cattle, including 20 oxen, for the third summer in the Alps.

Every morning from mid-May to early September, the "Beck'n Hannes" watches for hours after the cattle, which graze on the summer pastures around the Wallgauer Alm in the Estergebirge for several kilometers.

The animals are already familiar with the call and know that their shepherd always has something ready for them in his “Miaddasch'n”.

And so Hannes counts every day whether everyone is together, checks whether they are doing well and nothing is missing.

Since the Wallgauer Alm was also managed in Corona times, in compliance with certain rules, Hannes had great help with Elisabeth Holzer at his side.

His parents Hans and Guggi Tiefenbrunner also support their son with baking, cooking and serving.

Now that humans and animals had arrived healthy again and more or less exhausted from the long distance - the descent took around one and a half hours, which is like a continuous run for the cattle - the Wallgau volunteer fire brigade organized a hearty alpine festival, of course in compliance with the applicable corona rules .

From fine bratwurst to “shredded ox” in the bread roll, fresh Mittenwald Märzen to lovingly homemade cakes and tarts with fresh coffee from the local farmers, everything was there that a gourmet's heart could desire. A special highlight was the “fire brigade Howa”, a kind of potato pancake, which is baked in huge cast-iron pans in clarified butter. You can either enjoy it hearty with sauerkraut or sweet with applesauce. The "Tank'n Musi" played one piece after the other and earned plenty of applause.

After a break, the cattle were driven on to a pasture in Wallgau, where they were brought to the home pastures by their respective owners in the following days. There you can enjoy the autumn until about the parish fair until you go back to your stable at home.
