More than a third of the 107 bridges in Nuremberg are dilapidated and urgently need to be renovated.

An engineer points out the main problems.

Nuremberg - Over a third of all bridges in Nuremberg * are in poor condition.

This is shown by the current bridge report from the city of Nuremberg.

With 31 bridges, there is a danger.

You have "significant defects or damage that must be remedied immediately".

In five of them, stability and traffic safety are “significantly impaired or no longer given”.

Nuremberg: Trucks are the main cause

This is mostly caused by heavy trucks that rumble over the bridges with a weight of up to 40 tons.

This creates vibrations that can cause cracks.

Cars, on the other hand, hardly affect the structures, says the bridge construction engineer Christoph Miller to the "Bild".

Nuremberg: Rust attacks bridge steel

Deicing salt penetrates through the cracks, which is extremely dangerous from a structural point of view.

It contains chloride, which penetrates the steel, explains Miller.

This creates rust, which expands and finally cracks the concrete.

In addition, the rust makes the steel brittle.

There are 107 bridges in Nuremberg.

Most of them were built between 1960 and 1980 and are now of critical age.

Bridges built today have a longer life expectancy: around 80 to 90 years.

Nuremberg: Dr. Gustav Heinemann Bridge project worth millions

The longest bridge in the city is currently being overhauled.

The renovation of the 220-meter-long Dr. Gustav Heinemann Bridge should be completed by autumn 2022.

It will devour 16 million euros.

Which bridge will be repaired next?

That depends on which one breaks faster, says Christoph Miller.

Full closings in advance are out of the question, especially not with the bridges of the ring traffic.
