Russia's parliamentary elections opened today (Friday) and will last for three days, at the end of which the ruling party is expected to register a victory without real disruption despite a drop in support for it. This is, among other things, after the harsh hand taken by the authorities against Kremlin opponents in the months leading up to the vote, which is a test of President Vladimir Putin's power.

Voting takes place across 11 different time zones, from the Pacific to the Baltic Sea, in times of crisis at home and abroad. Russia is still facing a severe outbreak of the corona plague, which even put Putin in isolation after dozens of his associates contracted the virus, and a drop in quality of life. At the same time, its relations with the West are at their worst since the end of the Cold War.

The ruling party, "United Russia", will try to retain an overwhelming majority of the 450 seats in the Duma.

Most of this has helped Putin easily pass constitutional reforms that will allow him to run for office once again and stay in power until 2036. Putin, who will celebrate 69 next month, has yet to announce whether he will run again when his current term ends in 2024.

He has been in power, as president or prime minister, since 1999, so his decision on whether to stay in office or elect a successor is a critical moment for the Kremlin.

In recent months, authorities have weakened the opposition, led by Alexei Navalny, who has been imprisoned in a penal colony since the beginning of the year. He and his associates, most of whom went into exile, called for a tactical vote to harm the ruling party. However, 45-year-old Navalny’s allies are not even able to compete in the race after his organization was outlawed and an extremist organization was defined.

Navalny, who survived a nerve gas poisoning attempt last summer, was jailed on his return to Russia from treatment in Germany on charges of violating the suspended sentence he received after being convicted of embezzlement. He claims political persecution, which the Kremlin denies.

Navalny's allies called the election a scam and called on their supporters to vote for the candidate with the highest chances of defeating the ruling party in various districts, many of them Communists. However, the opposition suffered another blow ahead of the vote when Google and Apple succumbed to threats from the authorities and removed from their online stores an app that was used by Kremlin opponents.

The closest rival to the ruling party is the Communist Party, led by 77-year-old Gennady Zyuganov, followed by the Liberal-Democratic Party led by 75-year-old nationalist Vladimir Zhirinovsky.

These two parties, like the Justice for Russia Party, support Putin on key issues.

"The communists themselves are not very dangerous," commentator Sergei Farhumenko told Kol Moscow radio.

According to him, the party "is a tool for imitating an opposition movement."

The percentage of support for Putin and his party has fallen steadily in recent years amid wage erosion due to the epidemic and the surge in inflation.

Before the election, Putin approved one-time grants or salary increases for police, soldiers and retirees, populations that form the basis of the ruling party's power.

According to official polls, support for the Communist Party has increased in recent months, while that in a united Russia has dropped to its lowest level since 2006, although it remains the most popular party.

Simultaneously with the parliamentary elections, voters also elect governors and representatives to regional legislatures.

They are spread over three days as a precaution against the corona, but opponents of the regime see this as a move that will make it difficult to monitor the purity of the election.
