The massive breeding of wild pigeons has caused many environmental health problems. The Fisheries and Conservation Department started today (17th) at three wild pigeon gathering points in Central and Western District, Kowloon City District and Sai Kung District to launch a two-year trial plan for wild pigeon contraceptives. Feed the wild pigeons some feed coated with contraceptives to control reproduction.

The pilot project aims to evaluate the effectiveness of feeding feral pigeons with contraceptives in reducing the nuisance of feral pigeons. It will be located at the nearby MTR Kennedy Town Station Exit A, Ma Tau Wai Road/Ma Hang Chung Road Resting Garden and MTR Hang Hau Go to the wild pigeon gathering point at Exit A.

The AFCD commissioned a service contractor to feed wild pigeons with contraceptive-coated feed once a day at a specific time.

The contractor staff will wear a reflective vest printed with "AFCD Contractor" and place a sign at the feeding point to remind the public that the plan is in progress; and will monitor the entire feeding process to prevent other animals from eating contraceptives The remaining feed will also be cleaned up.

The planned feed is natural corn grains coated with contraceptives. The effective ingredient of the contraceptives is "Nicarbazin" (Nicarbazin).

Foreign studies have shown that taking the contraceptive pill will not have obvious side effects on birds (including wild pigeons), and the fertility of birds will be restored after they stop taking the drug.

According to a study by the World Health Organization, it is possible for humans to take the drug in large quantities to pose a health risk, and the correct use of related drugs is safe.

In addition, "Nicarbazine" will decompose in the natural environment and has little impact on the environment.

The AFCD has hired the City University of Hong Kong as a consultant to be responsible for relevant data collection, research and evaluation.

The AFCD will decide the next step based on the effectiveness of the plan and the actual situation, including whether to continue the plan, and implement the plan at other feral pigeon gathering points, and will announce the progress of the plan in due course.
