French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian announced today that his country has recalled its ambassadors to the United States and Australia for consultations after Australia canceled a huge contract to buy submarines from Paris and replaced it with a deal with the United States that included selling nuclear-powered submarines.
“At the request of the President of the Republic, I decided to immediately summon to Paris to consult our ambassadors to the United States and Australia,” Le Drian said in a statement, adding that “this exceptional decision is justified by the exceptional gravity of what Australia and the United States announced on September 15.”
Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced earlier his country's official withdrawal from the purchase of submarines from France and the launch of a security partnership with the United States and Britain, noting that his country would obtain nuclear-powered submarines within the framework of this partnership.
