Opinion | Complete opposites - or a government upside down? | Israel today

2021-09-17T03:30:22.152Z

In quite a few cases, almost all elements of this government do the exact opposite of what they promised in the election • But there is another version of the opposite - that everything is a show • Either way, the two scenarios have a clear result: the ideology promised by the parties will not be realized

Naftali Bennett and Nitzan Horowitz met for a real introductory conversation for the first time at Yair Lapid's home - only during the formation of the government.

The two are complete opposites of each other and this was expressed in the meeting: Horowitz met the person he thought was an extreme right-wing, fascist, religious figure and the like;

Bennett raised an eyebrow and tried to understand how it could be that Horowitz claims that Meretz is a Zionist party.

Three months and a bit have passed since then, and the two start the morning almost every day with 45 minutes of conversation, and another two or three conversations during the day.

The close relationship between complete opposites, the friendly attitude and pious trust between the members of the current government, is one of the outstanding achievements of the government.

Is it enough?

Can be.

Like everything in life, in politics everything is personal.

And when you want, and there is good intention, you find solutions and get along.

But this friendship comes at a heavy price - giving up ideology.

Politics is not a social gathering.

It is a tool for realizing and promoting ideology.

In elections, the candidates retire their agenda, promise to promote issues that are close to their hearts, and win the votes that vote accordingly.

Almost all elements of this government made promises in the election campaign that will not be fulfilled.

In quite a few cases they do the exact opposite of what they promised.

Thus, for example, Bennett who promised not to sit under a torch or with Meretz;

Saar who said sitting with Torch is like asking if he will sit with Peter Pan;

Horowitz and Lapid who cannot promote laws promised to the proud community, because of Mansour Abbas and his friends;

Bennett and Shaked are 180 degrees away from the promise of being "ten degrees to the right of the Likud," when it comes to settlement development because of Meretz and Labor.

And everyone is walking on eggs next to Bnei Gantz, who wants to present a senior position and leadership as in a meeting with Abu Mazen - and complicates his friends on the right.

And there is another version.

Backward logic.

Everything is a show: Levant is comfortable showing a sour face at the Gantz-Abu Mazen meeting;

Lapid undertakes the postponement of the evacuation of Khan al-Ahmar to prevent embarrassment from Bennett;

Shaked and Michaeli are many on Twitter and get points on their "base";

And Mussi Raz of Meretz is spreading angry messages about anything that smells right, but will not vote against the coalition.

Either way, the two scenarios have a clear result - the ideology promised by the parties in the election campaign will not be realized.

The prevailing political assessment is that despite being a hybrid government, it may fill its days.

None of its members makes voices of dissolution.

On the contrary - Lapid is thinking about the day he will be appointed prime minister and his staff is preparing for it.

In fact, the government is made up of two parties - Saar and Bennett - that if they disband the government, it is not certain that they will pass the blocking percentage;

And other parties whose voters will be especially angry if they disband it.
