The runaway fire blazing in California's scenic Sequoia National Park prompted authorities to wrap the majestic redwoods in aluminum foil to protect them from the flames.

"Crews continue to apply protective wrapping [aluminum foil] to iconic redwood trees and historic structures," reads an update from the Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.

The KNP Complex fire, which comprises the Paradise Fire and the Colony Fire, has burned 9,365 acres (almost 3,800 hectares).

The fire caused by lightning started on September 9 and caused the closure of the Secouyas National Park to visitors.

The base of General Sherman, the largest tree in the world, according to the US National Park Service, is wrapped in aluminum foil.

The tree is almost 84 meters high and more than 10 meters in diameter at the base.

Crews are preparing the Giant Forest, which is home to more than 2,000 redwoods, removing fuel from the fire and engulfing the trees.

Authorities were optimistic, reporting that fire growth was minimal on Thursday, although some activity intensified in the late afternoon as temperatures rose and humidity levels dropped.
