Social networks, new battlegrounds for heritage

2021-09-17T18:22:20.788Z

Twitter, Facebook, Instagram… it is now through posts and tweets that the defense of monuments, the landscape or the living environment is done. A trend that is accelerating and where the most responsive are needed.

The photo of the statue of Voltaire in the Parisian square Honoré-Champion, floating at the end of a rope, a few meters from its base, went around the web in August 2020. Convinced of attending a new episode of the "cancel culture", indignant Parisians have panicked on social networks, creating a snowball effect, one tweet generating another.

But, as soon as the digital controversy started, another tweet from Karen Taïeb, heritage deputy at the mayor of Paris, extinguished the fire:

“Yes, Voltaire remains in the City of Light.

His statue, owned by the State, has been subject to numerous degradations and tags, harmful for its conservation over time. ”

Photos of the sculpture in the restoration workshop followed.

Since then, Voltaire has still not been reinstalled on its base, but Internet users have calmed down.

Until someone again claims accounts and publishes a new one:

"Have we heard from the statue of Voltaire?"
