"

The EIGS will be able, even if it is very disorganized, to reconstitute itself little by little, and will not give up its fight of predation, of exactions and of terrorist totalitarianism and to sow terror

", declared the General Laurent Michon, following an audience with Burkinabé President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré.

Referring to the death of the leader of the EIGS, Abou Walid al Sahraoui, the French general indicated that it was "

a real collective satisfaction

", addressing a "

thought to the populations who have been victims for years in Mali , in Niger and in Burkina

”.

French forces killed the jihadist leader during an operation carried out in mid-August in the forest of Angarous, in Malian Liptako, in the area known as the “

three borders

”, according to French military officials.

The officialization of his death took place on the night of Wednesday to Thursday, by French President Emmanuel Macron.

"A real collective victory"

The fight is not over but it is a real collective victory due to the exchange of information, to the various actions of the different services and armies of the countries.

We are happy to have put an end to the nuisances of this harmful man for everyone

”, continued General Michon, Friday.

The announcement of the death of Abu Walid al Sahraoui comes as the Barkhane force is reorganizing itself.

"

There are things which are modified in an important way and others which are not modified

", indicated General Michon ensuring that "

what is not modified in the evolution of Barkhane, it is the fight against terrorist groups, al-Qaida, the Islamic State and their franchises

”.

"

We are continuing this fight together, we are continuing to support each other (...) and all this will last,

" he stressed, welcoming the "

increased arrival of new European partners (...) to fight against the terrorist enemy

”, referring to the Takuba task force, which brings together forces from several European countries, called upon to take over from Barkhane.

The EIGS, created in 2015 by Abou Walid al Sahraoui, former member of the Polisario Front (an independentist group in Western Sahara), then of the jihadist movement al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), had been designated as a "

priority enemy

" in the Sahel, during the Pau summit (southwest of France), in January 2020.
