Berlin - For the last federal election * four years ago, more than 40 parties were allowed to vote. Six of them made it into the Bundestag at the time: CDU / CSU, SPD, AfD, Left and Greens. Despite the loss of votes suffered by both the Union (2017: 26.8% - 2013: 34.1%) and the SPD (2017: 20.5% - 2013: 25.7%), the grand coalition has been in power for four years , an alliance of the Union and the SPD. With a parliamentary majority, but with a very different distribution of seats as in the previous federal election. Since 2017, both the AfD (2017: 12.6% - 2013: 4.7%) and the FDP (2017: 10.7% - 2013: 4.8%) have been in the German Bundestag.

In September this distribution of seats could change again quite a bit.

A new government constellation is also conceivable.

On September 26, there are once again many more parties on the ballot * than will make it into the Bundestag.

This year the Wahl-O-Mat offers an overview of this wide range.

Federal election 2021: Development and history of the Wal-O-Mats

The Wahl-O-Mat * was developed by the Federal Agency for Civic Education (bpb) in 2002. The headquarters wanted to offer voters a detailed overview of the numerous positions and topics of all parties. In order for a comparison value to be spat out, the users can give their respective assessment of 38 theses - the answers can also be weighted differently, depending on personal preference. The answers are then compared with the election manifestos and the positions of the respective parties. Theoretically, the result can then be used to determine which party is most likely to represent one's own interests. According to the bpb, the Wahl-O-Mat has been used over 82 million times since its introduction in 2002 in the run-up to elections. The questions of the respective Wahl-O-Mats from the past federal and state elections can also be viewed on the bpb website.

How will the Wahl-O-Mat questions for the federal election 2021 be designed?

Young voters as well as political scientists, statisticians and other experts are working on the theses of Wahl-O-Mats *.

In a first step, those involved develop around 80 theses from the parties' election manifestos, which are then sent to each party for an answer.

These answers and reasons are then available to users in the online tool.

Finally, the working group then selects the final 38 theses, including mainly those that make the different positions of the parties clear and / or that are central topics of the election.

Ultimately, each voter has to make the specific voting decision for himself, as the developers of the Wahl-O-Mats emphasize again and again.

As a support tool, the Wahl-O-Mat is a helpful election accompaniment - both for postal voting * and for voting at the polling station *.
