The US military calls the deaths of civilians and children in a drone attack in Kabul at the end of August a "tragic mistake". Human rights activists are now calling for redress.

Up to ten civilians, including probably seven children, were killed in a US air strike in Kabul in late August.

The US military has issued an apology, but anger and calls for compensation remain.

"Good to see the truth recognized by the Pentagon," tweeted the chairman of the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission, Shaharsad Akbar.

"Now reparation and justice".

The US military admitted on Friday that they killed innocent people instead of extremists in the drone attack in the Afghan capital.

The air strike was a "tragic mistake," said General Kenneth McKenzie, who is in command of the US armed forces in the Middle East (Centcom).

"It looks like the US wants to close everything with an apology," said the prominent Afghan television presenter Muslim Shiraz.

But that alone cannot alleviate the pain of the bereaved.

He asked the US to pay compensation.

"Words of regret are not enough," said Assistant Asia director at Human Rights Watch, Patricia Gossman.

A "thorough and independent investigation" of the US drone attack is required.

This US approach is not new, but has remained "completely unpunished" over the past 20 years.

US air strike targeted Isis-K

After the militant Islamist Taliban came to power in Afghanistan in mid-August, the USA and its international partners launched a large-scale evacuation mission to bring Western citizens and vulnerable Afghans out of the country.

However, not all people who wanted to leave the country were able to do so.

There was strong criticism that, given the rapid advance of the Taliban, the western countries had not started to fly out those at risk sooner.

During the evacuation at the end of August, dozens of Afghans and 13 US soldiers were killed in an attack by the terrorist militia "Islamic State" (IS) outside Kabul airport.

The US responded with air strikes and targeted fighters from Isis-K, a local branch of ISIS.

In Kabul, the US military attacked a car with a drone in which the Americans suspected Isis-K supporters.

It is now believed to be unlikely that the vehicle and the people killed were linked to Isis-K.

Shortly after the air attack, the media reported that several civilians had died.
