For 40 years, people with disabilities have been enjoying the peaceful life in Sünzhausen: in the Hermann-Altmann-Haus, a residential facility run by Lebenshilfe Freising.

Freising

- Sünzhausen is a Bavarian picture book village with a church, tavern, maypole and lots of green around it. For 40 years, people with disabilities have also been enjoying the tranquil life of the village community: in the Hermann-Altmann-Haus, an inpatient residential facility run by Lebenshilfe Freising. The 24 people in the house like it here, as a survey showed - a small selection: “It's snowing in Sünzhausen, out on the village!” “It's good that we can go for a walk right away.” “I like nature and the chirping of birds. ”“ You have peace and quiet. The house is beautiful."

The former school house from the 1950s in the center of the village was acquired by Lebenshilfe in 1980/81 and converted. At the end of 1981, the building named after the founding chairman of Lebenshilfe Freising, Hermann Altmann, with 16 living spaces at the time, was put into operation - the first inpatient accommodation for people with intellectual disabilities in the greater Freising area. Since then, the building has repeatedly been structurally adapted to meet changing requirements: three residential groups have been formed, double rooms have been converted into single rooms, a winter garden has been added and much more.

But by 2015 at the latest, the house was in urgent need of renovation and no longer met the current requirements of the Care and Living Quality Act, reports property manager Günther Schwab.

That is why the completely new building was carried out in 2016/17 for 4.83 million euros based on a design by the architects Michael Wacker from Nandlstadt.

The new Hermann-Altmann-Haus is a contemporary residential building for 24 people with intellectual disabilities.

Newly added are rooms for day care in retirement age, as more and more people with disabilities are leaving working life.

“But no matter whether old or young, we try to give our residents a home,” says Schwab.

“A home that is good to live in - for 40 years and for the future too.”
