Opinion | Oslo is not here yet, but its lessons should be worrying Israel today

2021-09-18T21:58:58.785Z

Lapid and Bennett restore the internationalization of the conflict and thereby also undermine Israel's status as a regional power.

Indeed, not every political meeting is a "Oslo disaster."

And yet, the sequence of political events seen here recently raises justified concern.

So what did we have?

Bennett's visit to Jordan, the meeting in Egypt and Gantz's visit to the Palestinian Authority - and the return of the Egypt-Jordan-PA regional alliance. The "series" program in Gaza, which indirectly leads to the reunification of the Palestinian Authority in Judea and Samaria with Gaza.

An entity united together.

The internationalization of the conflict has always been the bone of contention between the Palestinians and Israel and between the left and the right.

The Clinton plan of 2000 included the introduction of a multinational force into Judea and Samaria and the internationalization of Jerusalem. In the road map from 2002, it was already overseen by the Quartet. Annapolis, when Olmert and Livni led to similar international involvement in the region.

The right, however, did not need further proof after the resounding escape of UN forces from Sinai, before the Six Day War. Nor were they surprised by the failure of UNIFIL forces after the withdrawal from Lebanon, nor by the repeated failure after the Second Lebanon War (Resolution 1701 Was proud of her).

However, only Netanyahu's total opposition during the Obama administration to discuss John Kerry's proposal to evacuate the Jordan Valley, under the deployment of NATO forces in the region, has led to a change in this approach. The Trump administration has never raised this.

And here, Lapid and Bennett, each in turn, restore the internationalization of the conflict and thereby also undermine Israel's status as a regional power, which suddenly appears again as a protégé, as a "state" in need of supervision, assistance and external intervention in its problems. It is no coincidence that these days Germany is allowing itself to transfer funds to the PA for the development of Area C, and Egypt is seeking to bring into Sinai forces on a scale we have not seen since the Yom Kippur War.

Equally worrying is the idea of connecting Gaza and the PA, whether physically through crossings and roads, or administratively. Explicitly or covertly, there was an Israeli interest in the internal Palestinian rupture. Israel acted separately with each side, and at the same time did not hold political negotiations with either side. The idea of establishing two Palestinian states alongside Israel is so absurd and dangerous that no factor in the international arena has made sense in pushing for a political process before the Palestinians have settled the disputes between them. But the Bennett-Lapid government is creating a new and dangerous regional order, leading to a reconnection of Judea and Samaria and Gaza. To head one major terrorist state.

"Oslo" is not on the agenda, for now. But the lessons of Oslo require a constant skepticism towards moves that seem lonely or junior at the time, but quickly develop into a dangerous and irreversible reality.
