Australia revealed that the reason for its decision to cancel the submarine deal with Paris was due to its deep concerns and reservations about the French-made devices.
AFP quoted Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison as saying that the French government knew that Canberra had deep reservations about the issue of French submarines before the purchase agreement was terminated last week. The submarines are attack class because they do not meet Australia's strategic interests.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian considered in statements to France 2 that Australia's cancellation of the purchase of French submarines and their replacement with US nuclear-powered submarines would affect the future of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
Le Drian described what happened as a serious crisis, lies, duplicity, a major undermining of trust and contempt for France on the part of its allies.
