The Development Bureau, Wong Wai-lun, published a blog today (19th), calling it to alleviate the flooding risk in Yuen Long’s city centre. The Drainage Services Department has built a 3.8 km long artificial river channel "Yuen Long Drainage Bypass", which can intercept the Yuen Long Settlement. Water Zone 4

40% of the rainwater in the water area can flow directly to the Kam Tin River without passing through the open channels in the city center, and then discharged into the sea.

Wong Wai-lun also pointed out that the Department has opened up artificial wetlands equivalent to 10 standard football pitches downstream of the "Yuen Long Drainage Bypass". There are more than 130 species of plants growing in the wetlands, and 115 species of birds have been recorded inhabiting the wetlands.

Wong Wai Lun said that the Yuen Long Plain is located in a low-lying area and was often threatened by flooding in the past.

In 2006, the Drainage Services Department completed the construction of the "Yuen Long Drainage Bypass" with a total length of about 3.8 kilometers and a width of more than 20 meters in the south of Yuen Long City.

Heavy rain will cause upstream flood water to drain to Kam Tin River

Wong Wai-lun said that this artificial river can intercept 40% of the rainwater in the Yuen Long catchment area and flow directly to the Kam Tin River without passing through the open channels in the city center, and then to the sea.

At the downstream end of the Yuen Long Drainage Bypass and in front of the junction with Kam Tin River, there is a dry stream pumping station and an inflatable dam to control the water level of the drainage bypass. In the case of heavy rain, the inflatable dam will automatically vent and collapse. Let the upstream flood water be discharged to Kam Tin River to reduce the risk of flooding.

In addition, the “concrete grass grid” artificial grass planting method is used downstream. The surface of the concrete at the bottom of the river is full of holes, and the holes are covered with soil for plant growth.

Open up about 7 hectares of artificial wetland

Wong Wai-lun also pointed out that the Department has opened up an area of about 7 hectares, equivalent to 10 standard football pitches, in the lower reaches of the Yuen Long Drainage Bypass.

In addition, the dry flow of the drainage bypass will first pass through the oyster shell pond, broken brick pond and reed nursery in the wetland for natural filtration and purification to reduce the nutrients in the water to avoid red tides.

The results of continuous monitoring show that there are more than 130 species of plants growing in the wetland, and 115 species of birds have been recorded to inhabit.

The number of idle government land leases to non-profit organizations only accounts for less than 1%. Groups urge the government to simplify the application process. Diamond Hill Fresh Water Reservoir is moved to caves. Public and private housing is expected to start restructuring in 2027. : Don’t like to think about Huang Weilun again, saying that the land shortage is much higher than 1,200 hectares. The plan is to speed up the search for land and build houses.
