The Election Committee subsector election was held today (19th). The chairman of New Thinking, Di Zhiyuan, is a rare non-organizational candidate for the social welfare sector. There are 23 candidates for 12 seats in this sector.

When seeing reporters, Di Zhiyuan said that under the new rules, there is still room for non-establishment parties to participate, and he hopes that there will be a platform to "brave the voice of Hong Kong people."

Di Zhiyuan predicts that the current high turnout rate may be more beneficial to his election. He hopes that future elections will be more open and allow more people to participate.

"Hong Kong Needs Multiple Voices"

This election of the Election Committee is the first election after the implementation of "Patriots Governing Hong Kong". Among the less than 5,000 voters, there are only 2 non-organizationalists, and New Thinking Chairman Di Zhiyuan is one of them.

Di Zhiyuan said that the implementation of "patriots ruling Hong Kong" is understandable. Although some parties have adopted a negative attitude towards the election due to the reform of the system, he emphasized that Hong Kong needs multiple voices. In the future, there may be fewer non-organizational voices in the Legislative Council, but " It's better to have a voice than no voice." The non-establishment faction still has room to participate in this election.

Di Zhiyuan said: "The most important thing is to have a platform and space to speak out the voice of Hong Kong people bravely. This participation is already very valuable."

Some people questioned that non-establishment representatives are a minority, and even if they can speak out, they cannot change the voting results. Di Zhiyuan responded that speaking out is very important. He pointed out that in the past, democracy was not the pursuit of the number of people, but its representativeness. If it can attract social attention , It can also exert political pressure on the Hong Kong government and even the Beijing government.

Di Zhiyuan also said that today's turnout rate was better than expected. He estimated that the overall social welfare sector's turnout rate should be 80%, and as of 1 p.m., the turnout rate has been 60%, and the situation is quite enthusiastic.

Di Zhiyuan expects that, based on past experience, a high turnout rate is more detrimental to representatives with iron votes. For Di Zhiyuan, who has fewer iron votes, a high turnout rate will allow him to win more free votes.

But he also pointed out that the "rules of the game" for this election are different from the past, and the final result is still unpredictable.

Di Zhiyuan: Representative "not ideal" under the new system, hope is just a transitional arrangement

Since the reform, there have been voices in society questioning the representativeness of elections.

Di Zhiyuan said frankly that the representativeness of the electoral system under the new system is "unsatisfactory." He hopes that this is just a "transitional period" that will help society to stabilize and that the future electoral system will be more open and allow more people to participate in it.

He called on the non-establishment factions to work together in the Legislative Council elections and strive for "one more seat."

Di Zhiyuan emphasized: "Democratic movements have always been striving for every inch and step by step." He hopes that the future government will take the initiative to listen to different opinions and implement universal suffrage within a reasonable time.
