The recall to Paris for consultation of the French ambassador to the United States, Philippe Étienne, did not cause much excitement in Washington.
This diplomatic measure, intended to express deep disagreement, had never been used with regard to the United States, including during previous episodes of tension between the two countries.
The announcement of the decision, Friday at the end of the day, also came just before the weekend.
Joe Biden, who had gone for the weekend to his residence in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, even before the ambassador's recall was announced, did not comment.
The only reaction from the White House was a statement from Emily Horne, spokesperson for the National Security Council, who said: “
We have been in close contact with our French partners regarding their decision to recall the ambassador. Étienne in Paris for consultation.
