The authorities of the Spanish island of Palma, part of the Canary archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, evacuated five thousand residents due to the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano.
And Spanish media quoted the local government as saying in a statement today, “People are asked to be very careful and to stay away from the eruption area to avoid unnecessary risks,” noting that evacuation was declared mandatory in a number of areas and temporary shelters were prepared for people.
In turn, the President of the Canary Islands, Angel Victor Torres, said that the area where the volcano erupted was forested and sparsely populated, and so far there have been no reports of injuries.
It is noteworthy that the lava reached many homes and made a number of roads impassable, and before the eruption of the volcano on the island, where about 85,000 people live, an increase in seismic activity was observed for about a week.
The island witnessed the eruption of the "Tinjia volcano" in 1971.
