Learning to swim must be made up for

The waiting lists for swimming courses were sometimes long even before the corona pandemic.

Now there is a real backlog of children who want to learn to swim.

Dachau

- Closed baths and unusual courses: Many children have not learned to swim in the past few months of the pandemic.

A real backlog has formed, and many providers have not accepted any registrations at all.

The Dachau swimming club and the swimming department of TSV Eintracht Karlsfeld therefore took the initiative in August and organized two courses in the Dachau family pool.

The 24 places, which are only advertised online by the clubs, “were full in two days,” says Susanne Ranner from the swimming club.

The Dachauer Stadtwerke have also tried to catch up on courses that have been canceled in the outdoor pool.

But the weather did not play a role in either initiative in the cold, rainy August.

After all, on the day of swimming, which the municipal utilities organized together with Wasserwacht and Radio Gong on July 22nd, 66 children were given initial tips and assistance on how to learn to swim.

Of course, such an action does not replace a real course.

That is why everyone is now stepping up their commitment after the indoor pool has opened again for a week.

Cooperation between SV Dachau and Eintracht Karlsfeld

The 24 boys and girls who took part in the cooperation project between the Dachau swimming club and TSV Eintracht Karlsfeld completed seven units, in the family pool and once in the Oberschleißheim indoor pool. "The parents are incredibly grateful, that worked wonderfully," says Ranner. The spontaneously developed offer was only possible through the “incredibly flexible cooperation of the municipal utilities”. The missing swimming lessons are now completed in the Dachau indoor pool. The swimming club, which has fixed training times there, will release times for this, explains swim trainer Ranner. Then it continues with courses for members. Because even within the swimming club there is a long waiting list.

The municipal utilities have launched a real intensive package of learning to swim: "We have tripled the number of courses in order to teach as many children as possible to swim as quickly as possible," explains press spokeswoman Cornelia Scheyerl.

Instead of one course per day, the swimming masters now lead three exercise groups a day, up to six days a week.

Each course comprises ten units.

With this floating turbo, the municipal utilities hope to work off the backlog by October.

New registrations are already being accepted again, "but will probably not start until November."

Karlsfeld indoor pool closed until December

On the other hand, the swimming department of TSV Eintracht Karlsfeld is at a standstill, as the indoor swimming pool is known to be closed until December due to technical problems (we reported). "I hope that it will continue then," says department head Martin Kristmann. There are no alternatives, he asked in vain at the pools in Olching and Oberschleißheim, and the Dachau pool also has no free capacity. For the courses that started in February 2020, the participants have long been paid out. As soon as it starts again, “we will re-advertise the courses”.

On the other hand, the Wasserwacht would like to offer the swimming course, which normally runs every year in November and March in the Indersdorfer Bad market.

"We plan to do it, but we have to see whether it can be implemented," says Yvonne Neumüller from the Ainhofen branch.

But for the water watch it is clear: "The most important things are the swimming courses and the regular youth training."

The water rescue service gives the all-clear in the event of swimming accidents in the district.

“It was rather quiet at Karlsfelder See,” said Neumüller.

And, as is well known, the bath in Ainhofen was closed due to filming.

Even if more non-swimmers were romping around and in the water because of the failed swimming courses in summer: "Fortunately, that was not reflected in operations at the water watch."
