A group of Haitians who had been deported from the United States attacked the pilots of a flight on Tuesday after it arrived in Port-au-Prince and injured three US immigration officials, according to a source familiar with internal reports of the incident.

The riots broke out shortly after the landing of a plane carrying single men

who were handed over to the Haitian authorities on the tarmac.

Then, according to the source, several of them attacked another recently arrived flight that was transporting families.

The men assaulted the plane's pilots, who work for a government contractor licensed to carry out deportations for the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service, while the families were still on board.

Three ICE officials were also attacked and suffered non-fatal injuries

, the source said.

In a statement, a spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said: “On Tuesday, September 21, some adult migrants caused two runway disruptions after landing in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

Control agents in Haiti responded to both incidents and resolved the situations.

ICE fully respects the rights of all people to peacefully express their opinions, while fulfilling its mission to enforce immigration law consistent with our priorities, federal law, and agency policy. "

The United States stepped up deportations of Haitians after more than 15,000 people flooded the border, gathering under a bridge in Del Rio, Texas, in a matter of days.

As of Tuesday, just over 1,000 migrants had been transferred to Haiti, according to two sources linked to the operations.

A total of 4,000 have been deported or relocated to other processing centers

along the border, DHS reported.

Alejandro Mayorkas, Secretary of Homeland Security, assured Tuesday at a Senate hearing that the crowd in Del Río will dissipate in the coming days.

"You will see dramatic results within the next 48 to 96 hours," he

said.

However, after Tuesday's incidents, some people within DHS are concerned that

there is not enough security at airports to land deportation flights

, the source familiar with the incident said.
