A positive corona test can throw all possible plans overboard: the birthday party, the vacation - or even going to the ballot box.

What happens if you have to be quarantined shortly before or on election day and are no longer allowed to leave the house?

The good news: There is still the option to cast a vote.

However, you have to take care of it quickly and rely on the help of people who are not in quarantine.

Delivery by courier

Ordinarily, postal voting documents can only be requested by 6 p.m. on the Friday before the election.

According to the Federal Returning Officer, anyone who cannot come to the polling station on election day due to “proven sudden illness” has the option “to apply for a voting slip at the local authority up to 3:00 p.m. on election day”.

This can be done in writing, for example by email.

An application by telephone, however, is »inadmissible«, according to the Federal Returning Officer.

As soon as the documents have been requested, they must then be picked up from the responsible, local electoral office.

This can be done by any person who can present a power of attorney from the person entitled to vote and proof of the obligation to quarantine.

The voting slip can then simply be filled out at home, as with postal voting, and packed in the envelope.

Even then, a person is needed to act as a messenger and voice the count.

It is not enough to go to the next polling station, but the documents have to be returned to the responsible electoral office.

The authority's address is also preprinted on the postal voting envelope.

If the documents are thrown in the mailbox there by 6 p.m. on Sunday or handed in personally, the vote can be counted - even if you haven't set foot in front of the door yourself the whole day.
