Direct wheel connection: This is what the feasibility study for Otterfing says

Getting from Otterfing to Tegernsee by bike is the quickest way - five municipalities and the district want to create a direct bike connection.

The result of an investigation for the Otterfing area is now available.

Otterfing

- If the traffic turnaround is to succeed, everyday cycling must become easier, more comfortable and more attractive.

The district of Munich is already building rapid cycle connections, one of which runs from Oberhaching to Sauerlach.

The district of Miesbach and the municipalities of Otterfing, Holzkirchen, Warngau, Waakirchen and Gmund want to connect with the district border with one size smaller: A direct bike connection would only need 22.5 kilometers to the north shore of the Tegernsee.

While the “quick connections” are designed for over 2000 cyclists a day, the “direct connections” are designed for loads of 1,000 or more cyclists per day.

Preferred road shows technically feasible routes

The Bernard traffic planning office is currently presenting the feasibility study in the municipalities, combined with the suggestion of a preferred route and a cost estimate. Project manager Vanessa Platt was digitally connected to the most recent Otterfinger council meeting. "We recommend pursuing the project further," she said; the preferred route that has been developed is technically feasible. "This cycle path can serve as a model as a lighthouse project," emphasized the traffic planner.

The said preferred road extends over 22.5 kilometers, the study estimates the total costs roughly at 11.12 million euros.

While difficult land negotiations are to be expected in other communities, the 4.3 Otterfinger kilometers look like easy implementation.

Mathematically, 1.35 million euros are required for this.

The municipalities of Otterfing and Holzkirchen are making a good contribution: the Teufelsgraben-Passage is under construction and will be finished this year.

Its 731 meters are subtracted from the 4.3 kilometers.

Direct bike connection in the Miesbach district: Financing remains to be clarified

In the further, not yet developed course to the north, the route crosses the railway line at the Holzhamer Bridge and runs east of the tracks in the direction of Kreuzstraße, crosses this and from there first uses the Adalbert-Stifter-Ring and then the Argeter Weg. The asphalt ends at the edge of the village, and a gravel field path leads along the tracks to the edge of the district. "You can of course already cycle this way," says Mayor Michael Falkenhahn (SPD). In order to upgrade it as an official “direct connection”, however, the roadway must be paved, usually with asphalt: In addition, junctions, for example at the crossing of Markweg and Kreuzstrasse, must be specially marked. It is conceivable, for example, to dedicate the Argeter Weg as a bicycle route on which cars have to show particular consideration for cyclists.

"We're not that far yet," says Falkenhahn, who also did not allow the local council to vote, "it was just an idea." Now it is a matter of clarifying the financing.

"I am already expecting the Miesbach district to get involved financially," says the Otterfinger town hall chief.

As project planner Platt explained, an 80 percent subsidy from the federal government and the Free State can currently be expected for such cycle paths.

Mayor wants to contact neighbors

Falkenhahn definitely wants to contact the neighboring community of Sauerlach.

This is where the cycle expressway, which was opened in 2020 and comes from Oberhaching, ends.

"So far it has not been clear how things will go on here," says the mayor.

He wants to encourage his colleague Barbara Bogner to continue the cycle expressway on the existing farm road east of the tracks to the south, past the Ayinger sports field to the border of the district.

The direct bike connection in the Miesbach district will then dock there.
