US President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron spoke by telephone today (Wednesday), for the first time since the outbreak of the crisis between the two countries over the submarine deal that Washington signed with Australia. The two concluded that if Paris had been informed in advance of the agreement, which resulted in the cancellation of the sale of submarines to Australia for tens of billions of euros, the crisis would have been avoided. After the conversation, Macron decided to return the ambassador to Washington as early as next week. In addition, the two agreed to meet in Europe next month.

The summaries of the conversation published by the White House and the Elysee Palace indicate a calming of the winds between the two old allies, following the unprecedented crisis that erupted last week. Paris was furious at the United States, Australia and Britain, which signed the AUKUS alliance, claiming that information had been hidden from it that had led to the loss of the submarine deal with Canberra.

In response, she brought back the ambassador from Washington, for the first time in the history of her relationship with her 240-year-old ally, and from Canberra.

France also canceled a security meeting between its defense minister and Britain's defense minister, which was scheduled to take place in London this week.
